A memorial service honoring the life of Buddy Mock will be held at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, June 13, 2021 at the Dixie Gin, 6596 Sentell Road, Shreveport, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Father James Flowers.

For 79 years on this earth, true to his spirit, Buddy Mock lived his own way. Without compromise. A walking enigma, understood by few and beloved by many. What you saw was what you got – the genuine and even-keeled Buddy Mock. Whether you were a life-long friend or a stranger was of no consequence to Buddy. As he would say, “Either you is or you isn’t.” That was that. Buddy blessed this world with an unparalleled dry wit that was accompanied by his mischievous grin and his true one-of-a-kind laugh.

Buddy passed away peacefully at his home in Shreveport, Louisiana on Friday, April 9, 2021. Born Wiley Hunter Mock, Jr. on July 15, 1941 in Greenville, Mississippi to parents Pauline Kinlaw Mock and Dr. Wiley Hunter Mock, Sr. Buddy graduated from Greenville High School in 1959. He would go on to study at the University of Mississippi where he was also a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated in 1963 with a degree in Biology. He served in the United States military during the Vietnam era.

Buddy began his life-long farming career on a 300-acre tract of land in Tribbett, Mississippi. Knowing that farming was a tough nut to crack, Buddy dubbed his new farm Tuff Nut. As a testament to Buddy’s dry wit, he placed a hand painted sign at the end of a dirt landing strip for crop dusters proclaiming Tuff Nut International Airport. He was a true master of all things agricultural. Up until his last day on earth, Buddy Mock worked the land.

Whether hunting, fishing, farming or just driving his truck for hours on turnrows, Buddy’s true place of solace was the outdoors. The son of avid birdwatchers, he was adept at mimicking the calls of countless songbirds. If he happened upon a bird, with a familiar call, the two might exchange a word or two and Buddy would be on his way.

Those who have shared a duck blind with Buddy Mock consider themselves among a small group of very fortunate souls. This is a place he quietly shined. A dead eye shot and a master of the Feed Call. The laughs were plentiful, as the cold and wet were no match for Buddy’s wit. The hunts were epic and limits were met. Kevin Costner was once in Shreveport filming a movie. By happenstance, his path crossed with Buddy over beers at Superior’s Steakhouse. The conversation eventually revealed Mr. Costner’s desire to go duck hunting. Anyone that knew Buddy, would not be one bit surprised to find out that he was absolutely unaware of Mr. Costner, or Mr. Costner’s fame. It wouldn’t have mattered if Buddy knew any of that. He was just having a beer with a guy who wanted to go duck hunting. It’s probably safe to say that Kevin Costner had the best duck hunt of his life with Buddy Mock.

Buddy is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Wiley Hunter Mock, Sr. and Pauline Kinlaw Mock. Buddy is survived by his sons, Wiley Hunter Mock, III and wife, Angie, Walker Mock and wife, Linda and John “Tiger” Mock; his daughter Rebecca Mock Hargrove and husband, Clyde and stepson, William Priestley, Jr. and wife, Anna. Buddy was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren, Shelton Aguilar-Mock and wife, Devan, Maggie Mock, Cooper Mock, Mary Claire Mock, John Slack, Charlotte Butler Hargrove and Deborah Eliza Hargrove. He just missed meeting his first great-grandson, Knox Bennett Aquilar-Mock by a few days. Hopefully they met on the path along the way between here and there, where Buddy surely laid his hand on Knox’s head, chuckled and said, “Have a good time Pahtna! Tell em yer first one’s on Buddy Mock”. Buddy was very proud of his Mock and Butler family histories which he often shared with his surviving sister Dianne Mock Dyer and husband, Howard. Of particular note, Buddy is survived by his lifelong partner, friend and confidant, Debby Shackelford Mock. Buddy is also survived by his tree climbing dog Lil’ Bit.

Buddy held a very special place in his heart for John Mock. Due to tuberous sclerosis and autism, John requires care and lives in the Evergreen Life Services Home in Shreveport. Buddy rarely missed his Sunday visit to see Tiger and bring him a Coke and Mardi Gras beads. When the opportunity arose, much to Tiger’s excitement, they would take a long drive in the truck together. More often than not, that ride would include a stop at McDonalds. It’s hard to say who enjoyed those moments more, but suffice to say there was happiness all around.

In lieu of gifts and flowers, family suggests memorials may be made to Evergreen Life Services in Memory of Buddy Mock, http://www.evergreenls.org/give.

The family would like to give special thanks to Buddy’s physicians, Dr. Joseph Jones and Dr. Rodney Reeves for their many years of service.

Tennyson wrote, “tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Buddy Mock, you were loved and you are missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial honoring the life of Annie “Ruth” Payne, 86, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 204 Patton Ave., Shreveport, Louisiana, with the Rev. Matthew T. Long presiding. Burial will follow at Centuries Memorial Park, 8801 Mansfield Rd. Visitation will take place from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, with the Rosary immediately afterward.

Ruth was born October 24, 1934 and passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 19, 2021 after a short illness. Ruth was born in Ebarb, Louisiana and was a long-time resident of Shreveport and a homemaker. She was valedictorian of her Ebarb High School class.

As a young woman, Ruth worked at the Salley Grocer Company and later at The Shreveport Times/Newspaper Production Company where she met her future husband, William E. Payne, III. Ed and Ruth were married for 42 years before Ed passed away in 2004. The family enjoyed weekends in the summer at their camp at Lake Bistineau and yearly vacations to the beach. Ruth was active in her children’s activities, helping at their schools as room mother, serving as a Girl Scout leader and was a cheerleader for all their activities and sports as well as those of her grandchildren as they came along. She loved sewing and made many dresses and Halloween costumes over the years. Ruth was known for her wonderful cooking, especially her birthday cakes, chocolate chip cookies, meatballs, and lasagna, and her family always looked forward to a good meal at her house.

Ruth was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for most of her life. She loved her church and the Rosary! At St. Joseph, Ruth was a long-time member of the Altar Society serving as Treasurer and then President, the Catholic Women’s League and the exercise group. She was happy to help her church in any way, whether it was decorating the church for holidays or stuffing inserts into the church’s bulletin. For many years, she sewed baptismal bibs given to all children baptized at St. Joseph. In 1998, Ruth was bestowed with the Diocesan Medal for her faithful service to her church.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband; mother, Mary M. Ebarb; three brothers; and her in-laws, William E. Payne, Jr., and Lura Mae Traylor Payne. She is survived by her children, Donald E. Brown and wife Jo of Duncanville, Texas; Pam Mitchell and husband Curt; Karen Davis; and Cheryl A. Payne of Baton Rouge. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she adored, Dalton Mitchell and wife Jessie, Payne Mitchell and wife Katrina of Baton Rouge, Christopher Davis and wife Jaclyn of Bossier City, Christian Mitchell, Anna Davis, Tucker Davis, Marci Buck of Duncanville, Texas, and Will Buck and wife Justi of Dallas, Texas; great- grandchildren, Ari Buck, Weslee Grace Buck, Sadee Mae Buck, Lyla Hall, Emerson Mercer-McCollister and Fielding Mitchell; sisters and brother, Rita McComic of Zwolle, Argerine Day of Shreveport and Joseph Ebarb of Garland, Texas; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Her grandchildren will honor Ruth by serving as pallbearers.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Willis-Knighton Pierremont Health Center 5th floor ICU, Christus Highland Medical Center, Cornerstone Hospital, Dr. Bharat Guthikonda, Dr. Eric Smith, Dr. George Byram, Dr. Himanshu Desai, Preferred Care at Home of Northwest Louisiana and Ruth’s caretaker, Jennifer Story. The family also would like to thank the many friends who have been praying for Ruth.

Jack Howard Martin was born in Miller County, Arkansas on June 13, 1923 and died at age 97 on Sunday, May 30 in Hammond, Louisiana. He leaves behind a loving family and a multitude of friends. Called “Pappaw” by his grandchildren, most knew him as “Mr. Jack.”

He had varied interests including hunting, trapping, and gardening. When he retired at age 62, he planted a muscadine vineyard that kept him busy for the next 20 years. Jack was a master storyteller and would regale his family and friends for hours with numerous stories of his experiences. He had a smile (and a story) for everyone he met.

He served the Lord tirelessly and faithfully from an early age. In later years Jack and his wife Mary pastored the McCoy Church of the Nazarene near Rodessa, La. It has been said that Mary was the preacher, but Jack was the pastor.

Jack is survived by three children: Charles Howard (Mary) of Yantis, Tx. Rose Ellen (Bill), of Hammond, La., and Jack Jr. (Rita) of Texarkana, Ark., and his brother Reginald of Miller County, Ark. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary, his son Ron, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 11:30 and service will be at 1:00 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Vivian this Saturday, June 5th. Interment will follow in the Vivian Cemetery.

A “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service for Glenn A. Davis, 88, will be held Friday, June 4, 2021 at 4:30 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held prior to the service at 3:00 p.m. until service time. Officiating the service will be Reverend Tommy Allen.

Glenn passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 22, 2020, surrounded by loving family. He was a lifetime resident of Shreveport, being born here on June 4, 1932, to William L. Davis and Frances Richmond Davis Barnes. Glenn was a 1950 Graduate of Fair Park High School. He served as Junior and Senior Class President, attended Boy’s State and participated in many other clubs and organizations. At that time he could be seen driving around Shreveport in his red Pontiac convertible with his many friends that he always had.

Later that year while attending a dance, he was tapped on the shoulder by a beautiful young woman in a case of mistaken identity it was claimed. This encounter led to marriage in 1951 to Jane Clair Taylor. This loving marriage was full and joyous for more than 69 years and was celebrated and admired many times over the years.

Glenn soon began a long career at BellSouth Telephone Co. from which he retired in 1983. During this time he served as the Vice-President of American Bell Federal Credit Union and President of the local Communication Workers of America labor union. He also served as a Vice-President of the Central Trades and Labor Union. He served the union members with a passion and conviction to fairness for all. Although very busy, Glenn always had time to help anyone in need throughout his life.

Glenn participated in numerous interests and activities which included Baseball Tournament Leagues, Field Archery Tournaments, and local Bowling Leagues. He enjoyed camping with family and friends at area lakes and campgrounds. He was a Master Mason at Southern Hills Lodge 464 and was a member and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason as well as a member of the Alibaba Unit of the El Karuba Shriners.

After retirement, Glenn enjoyed the outdoors in the form of camping, hunting, and fishing with his children, grandchildren, and friends in Louisiana and Florida. He especially had many good times at Camp Davis. He loved traveling and attended many NASCAR Races with his boys and their friends. He grew tremendous gardens in his backyard and enjoyed tinkering with anything that was broke as it was seen as a challenge to get it working again.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Billie. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jane Davis; daughter, Glenda Vaughn (Jack); sons, Glenn “Rusty” Davis (Tina) and Mark Davis (Annette); grandchildren, Jason Holland, Krystal Davis, Robert Davis, and three step-grandchildren; great- grandchildren, Wyatt and Khloe Holland, and five step-great-grandchildren; sister, Kay Hurdle; brother, Bill Davis; niece, Lisa Rash and great-nephews along with countless friends.

Although Glenn’s life here on Earth has ended, he is on a new journey now with the Lord. For those that knew him, it would be easy to say that we all are lucky and thankful to have been a part of his time here on Earth. He was a great man and will be greatly missed. He loved and was much loved.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 235 Flournoy-Lucas Rd., Shreveport, LA, 71106 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Patsy was born August 18, 1936, in Cale, Arkansas to Lynn and Bema Epperson Luck. She passed away May 30, 2021, in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Patsy attended school in Cale, Arkansas and received her high school diploma in April 1955. As a child, Patsy grew up in a very small country community during depression and war time. Her father worked in the oil fields and later served sometime in the military which left her and her brother home with their mother to take care of the home. The lessons in survival and faith in God established a foundation that would serve her well through life’s journey.
She married James “Jimmy” Allen Baird from Homer, Louisiana when she was 16 and gave birth to their first son, Gary. They later moved to Minden, Louisiana and had two more sons, David and Pat. Jimmy was a heavy equipment operator and was often away from home for weeks at a time on road construction projects. But thanks to the experiences of her upbringing, she always took good care of her home and family.
Patsy became involved in the Minden Little Theater where she played a role in several plays and was involved in community activities. She received her beautician’s license and opened her own hair salon. She later took a job working at the ammunition plant in Minden assembling ammunitions for the government. After 12 years of marriage to Jimmy, they divorced, and she focused all her time and energy in providing for her family.
Patsy continued her career working for the government in defense related projects and later became an inspector, sometimes working on high security military projects. She even had the opportunity to travel on Air Force One with the President. Her career carried her to New Boston, Texas at the Red River Army Depot and later to Roanoke, Virginia. She retired from the government with a GS-12 status which provided her with a secure retirement.
In the late 70’s, she married Rodney Williams, a truck driver from Oklahoma City. They later established a home in Grand Prairie, Texas. Rodney was often on the road during the week and home on the weekends. This appeared to be a perfect match as Rodney was full of life and brought many days of happiness to their relationship. After Patsy retired, they moved to a lake house on Lake Bob Sandlin in East Texas. Rodney passed away in 1998 and Patsy relocated to Bossier City.

Patsy became very involved in working with the St. Jude’s Dream Home program. She worked tirelessly supporting the cause and raising money to support the children’s hospital. She made many friends there and was admired by many for her devotion and leadership.

Patsy was a child of God and had a relationship with Jesus. She will be missed by her family, but they have the assurance that she will spend eternity with her creator in heaven.

Honoring Patsy as pallbearers will be Gage Baird, Jason Baird, Jeremiah Baird, Landon Baird, Parker Baird, and Kevin Scott.

Patsy is preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Williams and her parents. She is survived by her sons, Gary Lynn Baird, David Allen Baird, and James Patrick Baird; grandsons, Jason Baird, Jeremy Baird, Landon Baird, and Parker Baird, two great-grandsons, Gage, Jeremiah, and Ronin Baird; and brother, Jerry Gene Luck.

A funeral service for Barbra Nell Howard will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2021 at University Church of Christ in Shreveport, Louisiana. Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City, Louisiana on Wednesday, June 02, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Interment at Rose-Neath Cemetery in Bossier City, Louisiana will follow the service. Jerry Hodge and Stuart Freeman, ministers of the University Church of Christ, will officiate the service.

Barbara Howard was born in New Iberia, Louisiana on August 10, 1942 to Clifford and Nell Migues Hunter, and was raised by her loving grandparents, Emmett and Elma Hunter. She passed away on May 28, 2021 in Shreveport, Louisiana at age 78.

Barbara graduated from New Iberia High School where she was a Rainbow Girl. She attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana at Lafayette for three years while majoring in education. She married Don Howard in July 1963 and they moved to Millington, Tennessee where Don was stationed in the United States Navy. They lived there until Don’s enlistment ended and then moved back to New Iberia. After transferring around a bit with Don’s oilfield job, they moved to Bossier City in 1967. Angie was born just months after the move, and David was born a few years later.

One morning while Barbara was dropping the kids off at school, the principal approached her in the drop-off line. He asked her to watch a class of kids for a while since he was having trouble finding teachers. He returned about three hours later and saw how good she was with the class and asked her if she would consider substituting. She taught as a substitute in many schools as her children aged into their high school years, most of the time in their classes. After her kids were in college, she enrolled at Louisiana State University in Shreveport where she was on the Dean’s list while she continued substitute teaching. At 54, Barbara earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, thus fulfilling her promise to her grandfather to complete her college degree.

Barbara taught at Hillsdale Elementary 2nd grade for one year, and Kindergarten for 14 years, loving all her children. As technology advanced and the curriculum changed, Barbara found she did not like computers nor common core, so she retired to spoil her four grandchildren.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford Hunter and Nell Courtois; maternal grandparents, Neuville Migues and MomVin; and paternal grandparents, Elma and Emmett Hunter. She is survived by her husband, Don Howard; daughter, Angie Howard; son, David Howard his wife, Dena and their children, Genavieve, Brooklyn, Ryker, and Vivian Howard all of Bossier City, Louisiana; siblings, Dianne Munger and her husband, Jerry of San Diego, California, Cindi Fremin and her husband, Corbette, Vickie Guidry and husband, Sonny, Harold Courtois, Jr. and his wife, Debra, Albert Courtois, and Timothy Courtois, all of the New Iberia area; cousin but more like sister, Cynthia Arthur of West Monroe, Louisiana; brother-in-love, Larry Howard of Marysville, California; sisters-in-love, Mary Schroer and husband, Ron of Tipton, Missouri and Nina Cramer and husband, Don of Kansas City, Missouri; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Barbara loved the Lord and spending time with her family and brothers and sisters in Christ. She especially looked forward to the road trips with the Senior’s group, Love Bears, and the Ladies’ bible classes.

Honoring Barbara as pallbearers will be Greg Boyce, Jeff Danowski, Keith Dillard, Dustin Hagan, Roddy Pate, Erwin Tipton, Daniel Perez, and Tim Wallis.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to Bossier KlDS, 2125 Airline Drive, Bossier City, LA 71111 or Ark-La-Tex Christian Encampment, c/o Carriage Oaks Church of Christ, 5561 Shed Road, Bossier City, LA 71111.
