Al Morgan

Al Morgan, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and "Principal Morgan" passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Born February 23, 1931 in Boyce, LA, Al began a life devoted to family, friends, and education. He taught us so many life lessons both inside and outside the classroom. As a husband, he exemplified love and devotion - as a father, love and forgiveness - as a brother, love and advisor - as "Papa," love and kindness - and as "Principal Morgan," love and discipline. His unconditional love was something he shared with all. Prior to a very rewarding career in education, Al proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. His outstanding service earned him the Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal. Al graduated from Boyce High School prior to attending Northwestern State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and later received his master's degree. Al also studied at Louisiana State University, University of Arkansas, and Centenary College of Louisiana. Al's career as an educator began as a teacher at Shreve Island Elementary School and then North Highlands. He then went into administration, serving as assistant principal at Linwood Junior High before becoming principal at Oak Terrace Junior High. He then finished his career at Ridgewood Middle School. "Principal Morgan's" greatest reward was seeing the academic growth, progress, and accomplishments of his students. After his retirement many students would introduce themselves to him and tell him what he meant to them during their time spent with him at the various schools. Al was a faithful member of St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church, where he served diligently for over 40 years. Dad loved serving our Lord and his life was a witness to many. Dad was a member of the Knights of Columbus and proudly served as Grand Knight. He was involved in many activities, fish fries, and fundraising events with his church friends. Dad enjoyed meeting people very much and did not meet a stranger. In fact, it seemed like he knew someone everywhere he went. Dad loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. Dad will be remembered for his steadfast faith, honesty, wisdom, contagious smile, and wonderful sense of humor. Al is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Pearl Morgan; first wife, Kathryn Salard Morgan; second wife, LaVerne Morrison Morgan; sisters, Nell Morgan and Robbie Bergeron; brother, Thomas Morgan; and daughter, Alison Morgan Mills. Al is survived by his brother, Louis Morgan; sisters, Althea Bergeron and Laura Houston; children, Brad Morgan and wife Debbie, David Morgan and wife Torie, Cathy Morgan, and Bethanie Reyes; stepchildren, Dana Williams and husband Jimmy, Gay Short and husband Ricky, and Kenny Morrison; grandchildren, Amanda Campbell and husband Billy, Justin Mills and wife Jorden, Ashley Morgan, and Kathryn, Parker, Weston, and Wryter Morgan; step-grandchildren, Stephanie Huff and husband Brad, Tiffany Adams and husband Lee, Brittany Self, Jamie Williams, and Jordan Morrison; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Honoring Al as pallbearers will be Brad Morgan, David Morgan, Parker Morgan, Jason Morgan, Chris Bergeron, Justin Mills, Preston Walker, and Jordan Morrison. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Thomas George, Bill Boyd, the Knights of Columbus, members of the "Bored" Group, and the staff of Superior Grill. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel. At 7:00 p.m., all are welcome to gather and share memories of Dad. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church with Father Michael Thang'wa officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery.
