On Tuesday, June 6, Major Aron Luther Mathison, USAF (Ret), passed away at the age of 85 years in Shreveport, Louisiana. Aron was born on January 30, 1932, in Skipperville, Alabama, became a Christian at an early age, attended Auburn University and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He served honorably for 20 years, was a Vietnam veteran, and during his military career attained numerous awards and accolades. After being honorably discharged in 1974, he went on to work as a combustion engineer at Libbey Glass in Shreveport; District Supervisor at JW Operating in Houston, Texas; and engineer at Specific Equipment, before retiring and moving back to Shreveport, where he and his wife lived until his death. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, gardening, lapidary arts, and was devoted to his dogs. He was a long-time active member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Aron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Esther Marie (Platt) Mathison; his children: Karen and husband Paul Schmidt of Coushatta, Louisiana; Kathy and husband Pat Nyberg of Long Beach, California; David and wife Chris Mathison of Huntsville, Alabama; Alan Mathison of Shreveport; Erin and husband Lt. Col. Jim Coughlin of Fort Belvoir, Virginia; his sister Rosalind and husband José Tallet; sister-in-law Joyce Mathison; brother Julian and wife Sue Mathison; his grandchildren; Scott and wife Julie, Michael, and Brian Nyberg; Zachary, Caleb, Joshua, Eli, Thomas, Andrew, Lily, and Rachel Coughlin; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Sallie Mathison; and brothers Reuben Earl, Jerrell, and L.C. Mathison. 
A Memorial Service and celebration of Aron’s life will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at Christ United Methodist Church, 1204 Crabapple Drive, Shreveport.
