Betty McDonald

Memorial services for Betty Baker McDonald, 89, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Central Christian Church with Rev. Tony Nations officiating and Kevin Thiemann assisting. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Betty was born on August 18, 1929 in Pueblo, CO and entered into rest on October 25, 2018. She was the fourth of five daughters born to Virgil and Anna Baker, and the only one born in a hospital. She was a breach birth, and often said that she came into this world "bass ackwards" and had been that way ever since! Betty was raised in Rye, CO surrounded by her sisters - Virlee, Joyce, Donna, and Lyla, her parents, and grandparents. After graduating from high school and finishing a year of college, Betty moved with her parents to New Mexico where she met the love of her life, Joal McDonald. They married on January 21, 1951 and spent the next 65 years loving each other and the life they built. The first year of their marriage was spent working on the Ghost Ranch, a famous "dude ranch" in Abique, NM. Many famous guests came and went, but Betty's favorite was actor Cary Grant. Story after story has been told of the fun she and Joal had during Cary's visit. Upon leaving Cary presented the three female employees with turquoise bracelets, and it became her most prized possession. She has worn it proudly all these years! When Betty became pregnant with her son, Lynn, she and Joal moved to Espanola, NM to await his birth. They later moved to Colorado and began work on the Red Top Ranch. It was a happy time for them. They loved the ranch life! Three years later, Betty became pregnant with daughter, Laurette and the family moved to Texas, where Joal began working for Central Manufacturing Co. They eventually settled in Paris, TX where they raised their family. Betty was an active mother to her children and a loving support to husband, Joal. She and Joal where active members of First Christian Church and Calvary UMC, as well as the Paris Rotary Club and Paris Elks Lodge. They lived a happy life in Paris well into their retirement years. In 2008, Betty and Joal moved to Shreveport, LA to be closer to their daughter, Laurette. They were active in Central Christian Church and in the lives of their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Betty was a master seamstress, a crafter, a lover of all things orange and darn good 42 partner. She loved jokes and pranks, her Greenhorn Mountains, hummingbirds and cardinals, and a good margarita. But most of all, she loved her precious Joal and her family. Words cannot express how much she will be missed! Left to cherish Betty's memory are her children, Laurette and Gary Thiemann and Lynn and Joanne McDonald; grandchildren, Laurette and Ricky Reynosa, Ryan McDonald, Kevin Thiemann and fiancé Laura Giordano, and Jody and Sam Thiemann; great-grandchildren, Soren, Hudson, Ryann, Annie, Quinn, Taylor, and Asher; favorite cousin, Roy Christenson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family would like to thank the staff of Garden Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially her 800 Hall staff for their care and attention during Betty's last few months. Their loving care will not be forgotten! Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church, 2010 Bert Kouns Ind. Loop, Shreveport, LA 71118.
