Carl Liberto, the last Editor-in-Chief of the Shreveport Journal, passed away December 3, 2018, after an extended stay in Pierremont Nursing home.

Carl, a lifelong resident of Shreveport, graduated from Jesuit High School in 1967 and attended St. Louis University. He spent a year working for British newspapers in London and then returned to Shreveport for the rest of his life where he worked for the Journal as reporter, City Editor and then Editor-in-Chief until the newspaper closed in 1991. He then started his own marketing business, CPL which he continued for many years.

Carl leaves behind two boys, Nicholas of Shreveport, LA and Michael in Alvin, TX and his ex-wife Janet Gilber of Shreveport, LA. Carl’s second wife, Carolyn Nelson, is now deceased.

Carl led a very active life. He was involved with the Italian Festival, the Rugby Club, and was a regular guest on local cable news shows as an analyst. He participated in many local elections in Shreveport as a consultant and advisor.

He also loved to casually entertain young children and adults with his origami skills. On a regular basis he would fold paper or even napkins to form swans and flowers which he would present to on-looking youngsters as a souvenir. He was known to many as the Birdman of Broadmoor.
