Funeral services for Charles E. Fredieu, 84, will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Shreveport, 543 Ockley Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held Friday, March 12, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Drive, Shreveport, LA. Officiating the service will be Father Joe Martina. Charles was born on January 11, 1937 to Lawrence J. and Dora M. Fredieu in Aloha, Louisiana and passed away on March 7, 2021 at his lake house on Caddo Lake from complications from a courageous battle with cancer. Charles was the former Fire Marshall for the State of Louisiana under the Edwin Edwards Administration from 1992 through 1996. He was a prominent labor leader for over 50 years. He retired as Assistant Fire Chief in the Shreveport Fire Department after serving for 34 years and was President of the Louisiana Firefighters' Retirement System for 16 years. His accomplishments are many, and he is best known for his tireless work for firefighter benefits and the pension system. He was the first recipient of the Victor Bussie Award and is in the Louisiana Labor Hall of Fame. Throughout his highly decorated career, he loved and labored for the firefighters throughout the state. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Fredieu, David Fredieu and Melvin Fredieu. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Tommie Faye "Marie" Fredieu; children, Wendell Fredieu, Priscilla Fredieu Brown and husband, William, Charlotte Miller and husband, Kenny, Andrew Fredieu and Jerry Fredieu and spouse, Robert Gerhart, Jr.; grandchildren, Jennifer DeSpain and husband, Daniel, Amy Strange and husband Jason, Stephanie Mason, Christopher Owen and wife, Leah, Matthew Owen, Charles Fredieu, Captain Katherine Fredieu and Jacob Fredieu and wife, Noah; great-grandchildren, Grace Haskins, Casey Leone, Cameron Slack, Eli Leone, Emma Strange, Walker Fredieu and Waylon Fredieu; siblings, Dolly Thompson, Creola Linzay, Robert Fredieu, Cathy Myatt, and Benny Fredieu; numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends. Honoring Charles as pallbearers will be Stacey Birdwell, Glen Benton, Bobby Cannon, David Phagan, L.D. Flowers, Mark Guastella, Bob Mayence and Tony Paul. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Shreveport Fire Department and Local 514. The family suggests memorials may be made to St. Clements Church, 819 North Pine St., Vivian, Louisiana, 71082.
