Dan Conerly Waters

Dan Conerly Waters, 81, supported by a loving family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2015. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 3-5pm at Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Home on 1815 Marshall St. in Shreveport. A private graveside service will be held at Northwest Louisiana Veteran's Cemetery. Mr. Waters was born and raised in Dodson, LA, enjoying popular radio programs, basketball, and scouting. He graduated from Northwestern State University in 1954 with a BA in Education, returning to complete his Master's degree in Education in 1964. After graduation, he served in the US Army stationed at Ft. Smith, AR. During this time on 12/17/55, he married Constance Loretta Kennedy of Oberlin at the First United Methodist Church of Natchitoches. He began his career teaching 6th grade at Oil City for two years, Claiborne three years, and Cherokee Park for one year. Mr. Waters first became principal in 1966 at North Highlands Elementary. After 14 years, he moved to A.C. Steere Elementary, where he worked another 24 years. When he retired, he was the longest tenured principal in the state. In 1986, the LA Parent Teachers Association honored him with the Honorary State Life Membership Award for his outstanding service as an educator. Mr. Waters loved his time in education working with teachers, administrators, parents and students to make a difference. Before and after retirement, He stayed active gardening, traveling and camping. He enjoyed reading history and watching western movies, and relished playing all types of board and card games. Mr. Waters loved animals, volunteering at animal rescue shelters, as well as local theatres and community events. He was a member at Broadmoor United Methodist church. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 yrs, Connie; son Michael and his wife Connie, their children Stuart, Lee, Eliza (Doylestown, PA); son Philip (Shreveport, LA); sisters Mary Ruth McIntosh & Dorothy Barbre (St. Joseph, LA), Betty Williams (Dodson, LA); as well as numerous nephews and nieces, and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mary Ruth, and brother Harvey Waters. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shreveport Little Theatre.
