SHREVEPORT, LA - Dean English Hurley, 90, a native of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana and the daughter of James Frank and Eva English, passed away on August 3, 2018 at Christus Highland Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in the sanctuary of Broadmoor United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, with the Reverend Dr. Greg Davis officiating. A reception and visitation with family and friends will follow in the church parlor and fellowship area.
Mrs. Hurley attended Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, Louisiana, where she met her late husband and best friend of 66 years, Roy Samuel Hurley. She was an active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, providing leadership in many lay capacities. She took particular joy in mentoring women of all ages through her service to the United Methodist Women and the Women's Society of Christian Service.
Always impeccably attired, Dean delighted in entertaining her many friends and family and was the consummate Southern hostess. An avid reader with a natural affinity for interior design, she served as owner and proprietor of two Shreveport businesses, The Book Mart and the Olde English Shoppe. She also participated in the Women's Endowment Quorum at Centenary College, the Women's Department Club, and PEO.
Mrs. Hurley is survived by two loving daughters and sons-in-law: Rebecca Hurley and Ralph G. Santos of Dallas, Texas, and Nancy and Kenny Beauvais of Benton, Louisiana; and her wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Mary Claire Porter, her husband John, and their daughter Lucy of Marietta, Georgia; Stephanie Kate Mijalis, her husband Dean, and their daughters Mary Elaine and Elizabeth of Shreveport; Patrick Dean Beauvais, his wife Olivia, and their son Grayson of Bossier City, Louisiana; and Andrew Hurley Grindinger and his significant other Elizabeth Bramlett of Dallas. Also surviving Mrs. Hurley are her sister, Juanita English Cunningham, many caring nieces and nephews, and her very special companion of 25 years, Doris Reed.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care and attention provided to our mother by the staffs on the second and third floors at Christus Highland Hospital and at Village Health Care at The Glen. Special thanks are also due to the caregiving team at Preferred Care at Home of Northwest Louisiana for their tireless devotion and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Permanent Endowment Fund of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 3715 Youree Drive, Shreveport, Louisiana 71105, or Centenary College of Louisiana, 2911 Centenary Boulevard, Shreveport, Louisiana 71104.
