HOMER, LA: Funeral services were held for Mrs. Dorris Spigener Robinson, 98, at the Chapel of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer, LA on Thursday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Thurman and Rev. Willard Moore officiating. Interment followed at Forest Grove Cemetery in Homer. Prior to the funeral, the family received friends at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Dorris Spigener Robinson was born December 6, 1918 to George Malachi and Lodell Bodiford Spigener in Arizona, Louisiana. She married Reece Robinson November 9, 1935 and they were married 79 years. Their children are Edith Ann R. Hausman and Peggy Joe R. Pike.
Dorris was preceded in death by her parents, husband Reece Robinson, grandson, Kirk Womack, and five siblings, Richard, Leslie, Eva S. English, Vivian Spigener, and Frances S. Brock. She is survived by her daughters, Edith Hausman and Peggy Pike and husband Alf of the Arizona Community. Grandsons: Keith Womack and wife Tami of Reno, NV; Greg Pike and Darlene of Hinesville, GA; Jeff Pike and Kelly; Doug Pike and Kristi of the Arizona Community; and Chet Pike of Camden, AR. Great grandchildren: Garrett Womack of Reno, NV, Reece Womack and wife Nicole of Shreveport, LA, Meredith Womack of Magnolia, AR; Austin Pike of Ruston, LA, Matthew, Michael, Cole, and Reagan Pike of the Arizona Community, and Justin, Julie Anne and America Pike of Camden, AR, and Elizabeth, Allison, and Chris Pike of Hinesville, GA.
Dorris accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at the Arizona Methodist Church on August 16, 1930. Through the years, she led Women's Missionary Society, served as secretary, sang in the choir, was Bible School Director, taught several Sunday School classes, played the piano and organ at the Arizona United Methodist Church. After fulfilling all the necessary requirements, she was certified as a Lay Speaker in the Methodist Church for 40 years. She filled the pulpit at many area churches. Through her research and efforts, Dorris got the Arizona United Methodist Church placed on the National Register. After researching the history of Methodism and the A.U.M.C., she had the information compiled in a book. Under her direction, the A.U.M. Church was the first organization in Claiborne Parish to adopt three miles of a road for litter control.
Dorris attended the Arizona Academy and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1934. She attended Norton's Business College in Shreveport. Dorris arranged for a historical marker for the Arizona Academy.
Dorris donated the land for the Arizona Museum, and after helping organize it, she served as President and Chairman of the Board.
Dorris retired from the Ludlow Corporation Accounting Department in 1977 after 20 years of service. After retiring, she took lessons to learn how to oil paint and play the organ and became very adept at both.
She served on the Board of Central Claiborne Water System.
Dorris served many years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Forest Grove Cemetery and as President for 18 years from 1983 to 2001. She mapped the gravesites and had a directory printed and erected in an iron frame for the entrance. She worked with the Veteran's Administration to get markers placed for four unknown soldiers of the Civil War.
Dorris served the Homer Memorial Hospital Guild for 12 years from 1987 until it was disbanded in 1999. Part of the time she served as Secretary/Treasurer and later as Vice-President.
Dorris wrote several poems and was honored with the Golden Poet Award for 1988 from the Board of Directors of World of Poetry for her poem "Our Constitution".
In 1987, the Police Jury appointed Dorris as Advisory Council member for District 9 for the Council on Aging and she began serving in January 1988. Later, she was appointed as a Board member of District 9 and was elected by her peers as Chairman.
Dorris joined the Claiborne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1979 and served as National Defense Chairman and from 1993 to 2000 as the Chapter Regent. In 2004, she was a recipient of the DAR Rose Award. At the time, only 12 had ever been given.
Pallbearers were grandsons and great grandsons, Jeff Pike, Doug Pike, Chet Pike, Reece Womack, Austin Pike, Matthew Pike, Justin Pike, Michael Pike, Cole Pike and Reagan Pike.
Honorary pallbearers were the men of Arizona United Methodist Church, J.D. Teel, Jack Cranford, Jimmy Wright, Ed Chaffin and Dr. James Robert Michael.
