Frances Flournoy

Frances Townsend Flournoy died Sunday, January 27, after a brief illness, and a celebration of her life will be held in the spring. Frances was one of a kind. She was active in the arts community, both as an artist and a collector. She loved tie-dyed shirts, hot air ballooning, and Camp Fern, where she spent many happy summers. A member of First United Methodist Church, she was also interested in other religions and would have been pleased to know that she had passed away when World Religion Day was celebrated in Shreveport. Frances loved her family and was proud of being a descendent of some of the earliest settlers in North Louisiana. She traveled to Flornoy, France, where records show that family members lived there in the early 1500s. Her parents, John Wise Flournoy Jr. and Minnie Cole Flournoy, preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother, Dan Herndon Flournoy, and his wife, Ruth; her niece, Sarah Flournoy Verser, and husband, Don; her nephew, John W. Flournoy II, and wife, Mary Austill; her great-niece Lillian Walsh Flournoy, and great-nephew John Winterbotham Flournoy, all of Houston, TX; her niece, Millie Flournoy Hamilton, and husband Jeffrey, and great-nephew, Joseph Gray Hamilton, all of High Point, NC. She is also survived by numerous cousins, their children, and Janie Richardson, her former sister-in-law. Frances was born August 11, 1958. A graduate of First Baptist Church School, Frances attended Louisiana Tech University, where she studied art, and spent a summer with Louisiana Tech's study abroad program in Rome. She participated as a Herald in the 1969 Holiday in Dixie Cotillion and as Princess in the 1979 Cotillion.
