August 4, 1938 - May 23, 2018
Funeral Home Rose-Neath Shreveport Southside
Gwen “Grammy” was born in Chicago, IL to Flossie Witt Latta and John Donald Latta on August 4, 1938. While her father was serving in WWII overseas, she helped her mother raise her sister Margaret, and brothers John, Stephen, and Roger in Kentucky, Texas, California, and Arlington Heights, IL. She married at a young age and had three children: Debra Gwen, Nanette Marie, and Edwin John. Later she went back to school and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work and became a successful therapist in Bloomington, IN specializing in child abuse.
Gwen was an ardent advocate for civil rights, particularly supporting the poor in her communities and the Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, KS. Gwen loved the outdoors — camping, canoeing, gardening, and cooking. She was a prolific photographer and painter. Two adventures that her children recall with admiration were the grueling cattle drive and the eagle nest watch.
Besides her children, left to cherish her memory are her beloved grandchildren, Jessica Holloway Anderson, Sean Holloway, Ryan Ingham, Tiffani, Jason, and Aleksander Friesendorf, Rebecca Smith, and Jennifer Brindler. She also will be missed by her great-grandchildren, Cole Sanders, Lucille Anderson, Brianna Webert, and Harrison Ingham.
Gwen will be remembered by close family members at a private tree planting ceremony.
“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.”
