James “Jody” Self 53, went to be with the Lord after lengthy illnesses on January 16, 2020, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born January 24, 1966, in Zwolle, LA to Sandra and Wayne Self.
Jody loved God, his family, his church, LSU and the Saints football. He was a deacon, a cook, and sound technician at church. Jody always had a smile and liked joking around. He never met a stranger and children loved him! He was “Pop” to his grandchildren and “Uncle Dodo” to some of his nieces and nephews. Jody was a #1 LSU fan- wearing LSU shorts, shirt, socks, and hat while holding a football to watch every game. Jody really enjoyed driving on his job, meeting people, and sharing Jesus. Jody and Debbie attended Rose Park Baptist church in Shreveport. He fought a long hard battle beginning with Type I Diabetes as a child, which led to numerous other health problems, including organ transplants and heart failure. He did not let any of these health problems keep him from doing what he wanted. Jody never complained about his health, but he did fuss about not being able to eat any of the things that he loved such as dill pickles, mustard, green olives, green stuff, pizza, and Mexican food. However sometimes when he was out with the kids or grandkids he would be a little naughty and eat some stuff he was not supposed to and he would say “don’t tell your mama” or “don’t tell you’re nana”. Now he can have all the meat lovers pizza and Diet Coke he wants!
Jody was preceded in death by his parents, Sandra and Wayne Self; niece, Kristian Deleigh Self; and uncle, Rodney Self. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Box Self; two sons, David Warren and Kim Sturgeon, and Brian Warren and wife Shannon; two grandchildren, Todd Warren and Sarah Warren; two sisters, Lynn Chism and husband Hugh, and Renee Wells and husband Kevin; brother, David Self and wife Wendy; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Rose Park Baptist Church, 5560 Buncombe Rd., Shreveport, LA 71129. Officiating will be Rev. Rocky Maddox assisted by Rev. Marvin LeLeux. Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 9:00 a.m. for family and friends at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Graveside services will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Springhill Cemetery, 275 Springhill Church Rd., Ringgold, LA 71062.

We would like to thank the staff of Advanced Cardiovascular Specialist, Northwest Nephrology, Ashley Ridge Dialysis Center and Dr. Kimball-Ravari for their years of dedicated care for Jody.
