Margaret Bell

On October 4, 2018, Margaret Bell joined A. J., her husband of 64 years, in Heaven. Her passing followed her spirit- quick, sweet, peaceful and surrounded by family. She is rejoicing to be with her parents, Lawrence and Ellie Goodwyn and her brothers, sisters and their spouses all of whom she treasured. Margaret lived an abundant life. She and A.J. moved from McAllen, TX to Shreveport in 1952 after they married where she was a bookkeeper for Holmes Pontiac. She then worked for Barrow, Leary & Co. as an investment clerk, the job she kept until Helen was born in 1962. She was a proud inventive stay-at-home mom until Helen went to school. She worked part-time for 6 years as church secretary for Community Bible Church, her church home for more than 46 years. She then accepted her longest position as bookkeeper for Summer Grove Pharmacy and Candle Cave where she worked from her home office for twenty years before retiring. During retirement, Margaret and A.J. enjoyed their activities with the Sunset Chapter of the O.E.S. where she served as chapter secretary for 27 years. She was a Past Worthy Matron and District Deputy. Her entire life Margaret enjoyed sewing. She made everything from curtains for the church youth room, to beautiful quilts in her later years. She was known as Mama, Grannie, Aunt Margaret and beloved friend. She was always helping others do everyday tasks and gleaned great joy from pleasing others with her many cooking and sewing talents. Grannie's famous brownies have been requested from baseball teams, golf teams, lodge meetings and church gatherings. She enjoyed attending weekly "quilting" club with the DeSoto Parish quilters every Tuesday and teaching Helen, Anna, Shelli, Katie and Jonesie how to sew. The ladies at the Shreveport Sewing Center were her close friends that kept her busy with projects and ideas. She loved them dearly and enjoyed spending time with all of them. We will never sew a stitch that we do not honor her memory. She has forgotten more than we will every know about sewing and quilting but she did her best to teach us. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Sikes and her husband Ron Sikes, their children: Anna Mason and Reed Sikes, Shelli Ligon with husband Lonnie, and Greg Sikes with wife Mia. Also surviving her are great-grandchildren Kyle and Katie Briggs, Samantha and Tommy Sikes, and Mitch and Madelyn Wilson. Also surviving Margaret are numerous nieces and nephews from the Goodwyn side of the family whom she treasured and talked about every day. The family would like to thank two special ladies that were Grannie's constant companions the last two years. Mrs. Leona Jones was the bright gleam in our eyes that kept Grannie happy and busy, doing all the things she enjoyed. There are funny stories and adventures that only the two of them shared. Thank you Jonesie, you are the glue that has held us together. Also, Ms. Vera Stinson stepped in recently and became a loyal loving friend when Mrs. Jones was not with her. She was the kind gentle spirit that gave comfort and peace to our Grannie. The family asks that memorials be made to Sunset Masonic Lodge or Emmanuel Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2018 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel with Rev. Harry Forester and Dr. Chad Hardbarger officiating. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the funeral home.
