Marian Long

GLOSTER, LA - Mrs. Marian Shirley James Long has gone to her eternal rest. Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015, she closed her eyes and the heart of this beloved woman was brought to rest in God's loving arms. Her journey of 92 years ended in her home at Gloster, LA, Park Dota Plantation. Mrs. Long was determined and steadfast in all aspects of life, kind and thoughtful, forgetful of self, ever mindful of others, and brought joy to all through her wonderful life experiences. She was honored and esteemed throughout her life for her splendid character and her sterling worth. She was one of three children of William Clifford James and Martha Schlaefli who were members of pioneer families from England and Switzerland. Marian Shirley James worked for several years in the Admiral's office at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington during the beginning of World War II. Being the patriot that she was, she did all she could to support our nation at this time in history. It was there she met Marvin V. Long of Gloster, Louisiana who was a marine serving in the war. They later married and made a home in Gloster, Louisiana for 58 years until Mr. Long passed away. Mrs. Long was a devout member of the Gloster Baptist Church in which she was an active member for many years. She enjoyed gardening and landscaping at her home for many years. Marian Long was also an avid golfer for much of her life. She participated in and won numerous events and tournaments locally, statewide, and regionally. Mrs. Long was the Shreveport Women's City Champion (SWGA) in 1970. She also has the honor of being the Women's Senior Olympic Champion in Arizona, where Mr. and Mrs. Long spent many winters in retirement. She thoroughly enjoyed her years golfing and traveling with her husband. Mrs. Marian Long is survived by her daughter, Marian Alice Long of Gloster, Louisiana, Park Dota Plantation; son, James Ashton Long and wife, Martha of Jackson, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Alicia Thomisee and husband, Joshua of Gloster, Louisiana; Audra Weber and husband, Kyle of Gloster, Louisiana, Park Dota Plantation; Logan Long and wife of Jackson, Mississippi; Dr. Ann Long of Seattle, Washington; and one great granddaughter, Adelaide Thomisee of Gloster, Louisiana.
