Mrs. Opal Madden Gaspard, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Bossier City, LA on July 15, 2018. Services will be conducted by Reverend Barbara Driscoll at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11 a.m. with burial at Alexandria Memorial Gardens in Alexandria, LA at 4 p.m. that same day. Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Mrs. Gaspard was born August 18, 1924 in Hall Summit, LA to Leonard Madden and Pluma Harper Madden. She attended La. Normal College (NSU) in 1941, where she met James Walter Gaspard. They were married on May 30, 1942 in Pensacola, FL. Following WWII, they resided in Lake Charles, Cottonport, and Alexandria. In 1987, she moved to Bossier City to be near her children and grandchildren.
She was a homemaker with her favorite hobbies of sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, making fig preserves and mayhaw jelly. One of her greatest joys was knitting Christmas Stockings for family and friends. Family, friends and her church meant so much to her.
Mrs. Gaspard was a proud member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as well as a member of the Red River Quilters and the Threadbenders.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James W. Gaspard, brothers, Rupert Madden and Don Madden, sister-in-law, Jo Edith Madden, and brother-in-law, Wayne Gay.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Gaspard (DeeDee) of Bossier City and Kim Gaspard (MaryBeth of Haughton, LA; three grandchildren, Steve Gaspard, Jr. (Jessica) of Oakland Township, MI, Kennon Gaspard (Stacy) of Haughton, LA, Angela Mitchell (Adam) of Haughton, LA and seven great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kole, Grace, Conner, John Aaron, Mary-Paige, and Kinley.
Also surviving are sisters, Jo Ann Gay of Nederland, TX, Nelda Emmons (Johnnie) of Natchitoches, LA, Frances Ber (Warren) of Baton Rouge, LA, and sister-in-law, Mary Madden of Bossier City, LA as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Greg Madden, Joe Don Madden, Johnnie Emmons, Jr., Jeff Gay, Warren Ber, Jr., Steve Gaspard, Jr., and Kennon Gaspard.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alan Borne, Dr. Scott Howard, and her team of sitters, including Matilda Johnson, Carol Bell, and Jenn Johnson. Also, thanks to her church and quilting families for their caring support.
