Mrs. Rowanne Barbara Johnson McCollister, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 after a long battle with C.O.P.D. at the age of 79 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Mrs. McCollister was born in Aurora, Colorado at Fitzsimmons Military Hospital on April 27, 1941 to Edward Eugene and Phyllis Irene Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack McCollister; her parents; her sister, Eugenia "Genie" Johnson and her many beloved pets whom she considered her babies. She is survived by one son, J. Clarke McCollister and wife, Sheryl of Shreveport; four grandchildren, Melissa Tucker, Rachel Duarte and husband, Efrain Sr., Gina McCollister and Chance McCollister and wife, Faith; seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Beatrice, Charlotte, Jakob, T.J., Efrain Jr., and Maria. Raised in an Air Force Family, Rowanne lived on bases all over the United States including Denver, Co., Savannah, Ga., Biloxi, Ms., Albuquerque, Nm., Puerto Rico, Wichita Falls, Tx., and Bossier City, La. She graduated from Haughton High School and then from Northwestern State University with a Masters Degree in Education. She went on to a long and distinguished career of 32 years with the Bossier Parish School System. She had a special compassion for students and served as a classroom teacher, student teacher supervisor, curriculum coordinator, assistant principal, 504 committee chairman and as President of the Bossier Parish L. E. A. She loved the outdoors and all of nature, especially flowers and four-legged animals. She spent time outdoors as often as she could and was an avid rescuer of pets with dogs and cats as her favorites. She even once rescued a baby squirrel and raised it. She was a great admirer of the splendor of birds and created a bird haven in her backyard. Mrs. McCollister loved cooking, she was a "Southern Living Cooking" queen and also a Master Gardner. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to Mutts with a Mission, PO Box 4147, Suffolk, Virginia 23439, the ASPCA, PO Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929 or to the USO, PO Box 96860 Washington, DC 20077-7677. Due to Covid concerns, a private graveside service for family only will be held. A Celebration of Life get-together will be at a later date.
