Sugar Scroggs Woods

Sugar Woods passed away at home on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the age of 94. A private memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church at a later date. She was born in Bunkie, Louisiana on March 5, 1926, the daughter of John Benjamin Scroggs, and Frances Hatfield Scroggs. She grew up in Bunkie during the Great Depression, along with her three sisters, and developed a strong work ethic early in life. She was proud of the fact that she used to milk the cows before going to school each day. Mom often said she danced her way thru WWII at the Blue Moon. Her first date with Dalton John Woods was to the 1950 Sugar Bowl game where LSU played Oklahoma. It was at that game that she fell in love with dad and LSU Football. She was married in May of 1951 and moved to Shreveport where she and Dalton built a house on College Lane behind First Baptist Church. After a few years, a growing family caused them to move to North Highlands, where they raised their two children. Mom loved to cook and entertain and was involved with her children on many family vacations to the lake and served as a permanent lifeguard for the neighborhood children in the backyard pool. Sugar was an accomplished seamstress and loved making clothes and crocheted edges of blankets for friends and family. She and Dalton were very involved in politics, and she enjoyed hosting everyone from the President of the United States, United States Senators, Congressmen, Cabinet members and Governors at the family home on Ellerbe Road. She was a strong proponent of Higher Education and supported LSU and LSUS and the LSU Alumni Association throughout her lifetime. Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and her four sisters. She is survived by her son, Michael Hatfield Woods and his wife, Tracie; her daughter, Dr. Mary Woods Keisler and husband, Wade; six grandchildren, Katherine W. Collins, Michael H. Woods, Jr., Erin W. Morris, My-Khanh T. Nguyen, Lauren K. Schultz, and Caroline Keisler; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express deep gratitude for all the special care and assistance given through the years by Pat and Noble Moran, her sitters, Brenda Davis, Shonna Ashton and Tywander Morgan. In addition, the family wishes to thank Dr. Ricky Jones, Tim Wheelahan, and the employees at Woods Operating Co. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 543 Ockley Drive, Shreveport, LA 71106.
