SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services for Virgie Singleton Wallace, 87, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at First United Methodist Church, Arcadia, LA. Rev. Bill Moon will officiate. Interment will follow at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dubach, LA, located at the Intersection of Hwy 151 and McCullin Rd. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Virgie was born on June 10, 1927, in Lincoln Parish, LA, and entered into eternal life on December 27, 2014 in Shreveport, LA at the age of 87. For most of her life she lived in the Terryville Community in Lincoln Parish, LA. She was an active member of the Salem United Methodist Church, serving as a member of The Women's Society of Christian Service, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Children's Sunday School teacher, and Youth Director. She enjoyed flower arranging, vegetable gardening, freezing and canning produce, cooking, working in her yard, entertaining in her home, knitting, needlepoint and cross stitching, and most of all helping and doing for others. Later in life she and Don moved to Arcadia, LA where she became a faithful member of The First United Methodist Church. There she enjoyed serving on The Kitchen Committee, United Methodist Women, and preparing the altar for services. She was a member of PEO, Inter Nos Club, Literature Club, and The Arcadia Beautification and Restoration Committee. She and Don planted and cared for many Crape Myrtle and Bradford Pear trees throughout the town. She had a close-knit group of lady friends who drank coffee together almost every day at The Knob Hill Inn or at someone's home. Virgie attended Nobles School, graduated from Ruston High School, and began working at Kirkland Drugstore in Arcadia, LA. In 1946 she was employed as a stenographer and clerical supervisor at the Arcadia Welfare Department. She worked in the Ruston office for one year in 1963 before returning to Arcadia in 1964 as a Welfare Visitor. She retired in 1982 with 35 years of service. Virgie moved to Shreveport, LA in 2011 where she and Don lived at The Stiles Apartments at The Glen Retirement Center. There she enjoyed watching Don play on the Bean Bag Baseball Team, attending church services, and visiting with new friends. Virgie was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Don; her parents, Odie and Doris (Dye) Singleton; her sisters, Bernie Williams and Carma Cook; her brother, Dewey Singleton; her nephew, Barry Cook, and her sister-in-law, Gene Wallace Oliver. She is survived by her daughter, Jan, and her husband, Stuart Briscoe; her brother-in-law, Jay Williams of Shreveport, LA; sister-in-law, Gayle Singleton of Arcadia, LA; nieces, Helen Ann Brasher and her husband, Cole of Houston, Texas, and Deanna Carter and her husband, Dave, of Simi Valley, CA; Marsha Mixon of The Woodlands, TX, and Dannie Gene White of Natchez, MS; nephews, Ken Singleton and wife, Tammy of Arcadia, LA, Keith Singleton and wife, Sherrie of Haughton, LA, Travis Mixon and wife, Sarah, and Adam Mixon of The Woodlands, TX; great niece, Mary Ann Brasher of Houston, TX; great great niece, Eleanor Mixon, of The Woodlands, TX; great nephews, Jack Brasher of Houston, TX, and Chandler Singleton of Arcadia, LA. Virgie's family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Hernandez and his staff for their loving care through the years, Dr. William J. Parker, Jr., Dr. David Green, Dr. Ben Kacos, her loving caregivers, Mary Foster, Lora Peyton, and Betty Williams, many friends and family who visited, and the Staff at The Glen Retirement Center. We also extend special thanks to her very special brother-in-law, Jay Williams, for his numerous visits, concern, and love. Serving as Pallbearers will be James Briscoe, Eddie Evans, David Adams, Jerry Callender, and John Ballance, Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Jay Williams, Stuart Briscoe IV, Cole Brasher, Jack Brasher, and Judge Robert Butler. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Arcadia, LA, Salem United Methodist Church of Dubach, LA, The Healing Power of Music at LSU Feist-Weiller Cancer Center by calling (318)813-1423, The Glen Retirement Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the charity of choice. Virgie and Don were married for 67 years. It could be noted that if her death certificate were filled out accurately it would reflect that Virgie died of a broken heart. She missed Don so much at his passing six months ago, and was lost without him. It is our fervent belief that they are together again with their Lord for all of eternity.
