Alice Faye Heckel

Alice Faye Harmon Heckel entered into rest on September 8, 2024, at the age of 84, after a long and courageous battle with Myelofibrosis. Services, officiated by Rev. Danny Baskin, were held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Church, 501 West 3rd Street, Homer, LA, following a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Interment was in at Arlington Cemetery in Homer, LA.

Alice was born September 20, 1939, in Homer, LA, to Ralph L. and Mary Alice Prince Harmon. She was reared in Homer, graduated from Homer High School in 1957, and then attended Northwestern State University. In addition to becoming a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and a Homecoming Queen, she met the love of her life, Bert Heckel, who was the captain of the football team. After dating for three months, they married and remained in Natchitoches while Bert earned his degree. Bert's coaching career led them on a path through Many, Ponchatoula, and eventually to Homer. Alice’s career included various secretarial positions and employment by the Claiborne Community Action until she retired. Her children & grandchildren were the light of her life. She, no doubt, was one of their biggest fans and thoroughly enjoyed supporting them in all of their many activities. Alice loved to go! A few of her favorite pastimes included playing cards weekly with a group of her friends and enjoying “Girls’ Day Out” with Dianne, Charlotte, Katherine, and Bec. She also had a passion for antiquing, “junking”, & contributing to her collection of treasures. Alice was a life-long member of Wesley Chapel at Lake Claiborne. She was loved dearly by family and friends, and although she will be missed deeply, we find peace and joy knowing she will spend eternity with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 55 years, Bertrand Joseph Heckel, SR; and brother, Eddie Ralph Harmon.

She is survived by her sister, Rebecca McDaniel (Johnny) of Minden, sister-in-law, Diane Smith Harmon of Homer ; three children: Joe Heckel (Alyson) of Homer, Mike Heckel (Anissa) of Haynesville, and Angie Jones (Scott )of Homer; seven grandchildren: Hunter Heckel (Jordan) of Ruston, Lainey Walker (Adam) of Minden, Ashlyn Heckel of Simsboro, McCall Rae (Ryan) of Antioch, Tennessee, Anslee Kaiama (Josh) of Shreveport, Austyn Heckel of Haynesville , and Bridget Morales ( Matt ) of Geismar; three great-grandchildren: Hannah Morales, Lucas Walker, Mary Virginia Heckel, and one on the way, Kollins Kaiama; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Matt Morales, Adam Walker, Ryan Rae, Josh Kaiama, Ryan Harmon, and Shane Lord.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at CMMC for the care and compassion shown to Alice during her lengthy illness. They owe a very special thanks to Dr. Neelima Chintapalli and staff, Dr. Cliff Salmon and staff, nurses Charnell Teague, Melody Ceccarelli, and Stephanie Gantt, and her sitters Ricki Good, Helen Burns, and Betty Glass. Words cannot adequately express what a Blessing Katherine Lester Smith has been to their family. Alice was fortunate to find a friend who possessed a considerate, unselfish, loving heart and ready and willing to help any time of the day or night with a smile on her face! Katherine became like part of the family, and her friendship will have a lasting impact on their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Arlington Cemetery, PO Box 161, Homer, LA 71040.
