HOMER, LA: Alma Ward Cross Cox passed away Sunday, January 24, at the Claiborne Memorial Hospital at the age of 96. Visitation was Thursday, January 28, 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer, LA and the funeral service was Friday, January 29, at 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Homer. The burial service was at Tulip Cemetery in Athens, LA. Born in 1920 in Titus, Alabama, Alma was one of 9 children born to Jefferson A. and Alpha Vertis Ward. Her siblings are Chester Ward (deceased), Carey Ward (deceased), Lafayette Ward (deceased), Clifford Ward (deceased).....the others left to cherish her memories are Wilma Harmon, Everett Ward, Betty & Jo Almond, and Shirley Williams. Alma had a very special bond with her brothers and sisters and loved spending time with them. Alma's children are Harold & Geanie Cross and Johnette & Jim Faulkner of Homer, LA, and Ricky Cross (deceased). Grandchildren are Kayla & Dennis Austin, Karen & Terry Barnett, Kelli & Doug Dominick, Brandon Rich, Traci Smith, Carol Ellen Cross (deceased) and Suzanne Cross (deceased). She has numerous great grandchildren and great, grandchildren. Alma'a Family was her life and all the memories of her will always be precious and carried on from generation to generation. Alma and her family moved from Titus, Alabama, on the train to Homer with just a hunting dog and a sewing machine when she was 9 years old. She graduated from the Athens' schools and worked for a short period of time in Shreveport until the death of her mother. At 17 years of age, Alma moved back to Athens to help care for her siblings. She married George Cross and because of his work, they moved many times, then moved back to Homer and raised their children. Alma and George started a parts & automotive service business and during that time, traveled all over the world. Years later, Alma went to work at Toni's. Then 2 Sister's clothing business a total of 17 years. George passed away in 1995 and Alma spent several years traveling with family and friends, in 1999, she married Raleigh Cox and enjoyed their time together before his death in 2009. Raleigh's children, Raleigh Lee and Pam continued to stay in touch with Alma. Alma loved people so much and they loved her....she was a very special person. Her family, friends and Church family were the world to her! She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Homer well over 50 years....she never missed going to Church on Sunday until she was just not able to go anymore, but her Church family always stayed in touch with her and prayed for her. When Alma was asked if she had done everything on her "bucket list," she said she had done everything she had wanted to do. She was an amazing woman with an amazing life. She will never be forgotten!! Pallbearers were Brandon Rich, Doug Dominick, Terry Barnette, Adam Ford, Jerry Almond and Danny Ford. In lieu of flowers honoring Mrs. Cox, her family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Homer.
