Funeral services celebrating the life of Mr. Alonzo Wilson Coon, 96, will be Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport. Dr. Larry Williams will be officiating with Dr. Scott Tatum assisting. Interment to follow at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Ave. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until the service begins.

Al was born November 12, 1918 in Belah, LA and passed away May 9, 2015 in Shreveport, LA. In 1936 he moved to Shreveport, where he met and married Helen Caskey and together they had two children. Al was an executive assistant for the R.W. Norton family for over 57 years. In the mid 1970's, he was elected to the Board of Directors at the Norton Art Foundation. At age 87, he retired from working as their executive assistant but continued his work on the Board of Directors until December of 2014. After his retirement, he had plenty of time to devote to his gardening. His specialties were his tomatoes and peppers; which he used to make pepper sauce. Al was very generous with his vegetables, giving them to his friends, family and neighbors; never charging anyone, he just enjoyed sharing the bounty of his efforts. He was a long time member of Broadmoor Baptist Church; The American Legion of Arcadia and the Elks Club of Shreveport.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, William J. Coon and Viola Corley; his wife, Helen Caskey Coon; brothers, Leo A. Coon, Wayne Coon and Hardy Coon; and sisters, Katherine Roberts and Patty Postlewait. He is survived by his daughter, Carol C. Lotspeich; son, James A. Coon; sister-in-law, Jeanette Coon of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Stephanie Holley Lynn (Jeff) of Belcher, LA; Caroline Holley Hill (Jonathan) of Woodstock, GA; step-grandchildren, John L. Lotspeich, (David Asboe) of London, England; Leigh Anne Lester (Nick) of San Antonio, TX; and six great-grandchildren.
