Alvyn Roland Ragan, Jr., 81, of Haughton, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, proving that one’s resilience and stubbornness are no match for fate and God’s will. Alvyn, one of the famed Ragan triplets, was born on May 7, 1943, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Alvyn Sr. and Glenn Norris Walker Ragan. His siblings, William Edgar and Mary Jo, followed him in birth that day. They grew up on Walker Road, in the Summer Grove area of south Shreveport, where they gained notoriety as inveterate pranksters. Alvyn’s quick wit and dry sense of humor stayed with him until the very end.
Alvyn spent his professional life as a plumber, a member of Local 141 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Throughout his long career, he worked for several plumbing shops in the Shreveport-Bossier area with the notable exception of a period in 1976-77, when he went to Alaska to participate in the construction of the Trans-Alaskan Oil Pipeline. In his work, Alvyn sought to open people’s drains, but it was his calling to open people’s hearts. He was a devout Christian known to have helped found a church or two, namely, Shreveport Bible Church in the mid-1970s and the Church at Red River in the late 1980s. After moving to Haughton, he attended the Koran Baptist Church. For 18 years, Alvyn also served on the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office Posse, where he participated in assisting with the Food Bank and other community outreach when called upon.
A loving father, he helped raise his three remarkable children. After retiring to Lake Bistineau, he doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For his wide and dedicated circle of friends and family, he hosted countless fish fries, pool parties, and a variety of boating fun, which might include “tubing” for the more adventurous or simply cruising around the lake and enjoying time together.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Jo Canepa of Memphis, Tennessee; children, Edward Ragan, Monica (Tod) Rawls, and Robbin Ragan; his grandchildren, Zac Ragan, Ragan Alexandra (Garrett) Bickham, Austin Holsapple, Katherine (Devin) Norris, and Elisabeth Grace Rawls; and his great grandchildren, Bentley Winters, Walker Bickham, Vivian Bickham, Owen Johnson, and Lylah Norris. He was preceded in death, in 2004, by his brother Edgar.
A celebration of Alvyn’s life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The family will gather at 11:00 AM, with friends joining at noon. The service will begin at 1:00 PM, with interment to follow at First Baptist Church of Haughton Cemetery on Hwy 157.
Honoring Alvyn as pallbearers will be Zac Ragan, Austin Holsapple, Garrett Bickham, Jacob Vaitkus, Devin Norris, and Hunter Pipes. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Todd Kokoschke and Bill Winkler.
The family would like to give special thanks to the physicians and staff who cared for Alvyn in recent years. This includes April Culver at Elara Caring Home Health, Dr. Russell Fileccia and Dr. Rodney Reeves at Advanced Cardiovascular Specialists, Dr. Scott Howard, Pulmonologist, Dr. Cheng Chu, Nephrologist, and Dr. Ted Warren at Willis Knighton Louisiana Family Practice.
