Annie Duncan McFarland

Annie Duncan McFarland died peacefully in her sleep in the company of her children and grandchildren on July 13, 2014 at the John R. Williamson Hospice House at 101 years of age. She was born September 2, 1912, one of five children born to Scottish parents John and Jessie Duncan, in Gloster, Louisiana.

After graduating from high school at the age of 16 and then college at Northwestern State University of Louisiana at 19, Annie worked as a 3rd grade teacher in several Louisiana public schools including Jewella Elementary in Shreveport from 1951 to 1961. In 1961 she moved to Mansfield, Louisiana where she lived and taught at Mansfield Elementary until her retirement in 1976. She then moved to El Dorado, Arkansas in November of 1998.

Annie was married to James Frank McFarland from 1936 until his death in 1986. After moving to El Dorado, Annie worked as a volunteer at the local hospital and as a mentor at Yocum Elementary. She lived the last four years of her life at Hudson Senior Center.

Annie is survived by her three children: Donald McFarland and his wife Shirley, John McFarland and his wife Melissa, and Marianne Eagleson and her husband William. Annie is also survived by her six grandchildren: Scott Eagleson, Elizabeth Eagleson, Rod, Jeff, and Andrew McFarland, and Alison Kennedy, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.

Annie was devoted to a life of caring for others, whether it was volunteering at the hospital or providing guidance to her own family. She was an avid reader, a world traveler - having visited Scotland more than once - and a continually reliable source for sage if candid advice. She was a constant inspiration to her family and friends.

It is requested that memorials be given to the John R. Williamson Hospice House at 2301 Champagnolle Rd, El Dorado, AR 71730, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Burial services will take place in Mansfield, Louisiana at Mansfield Cemetery on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.
