SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services for Avis Edna Akers Pitts, 89, will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Bill Crosby and Rev. Harold Ashcraft. Interment will be held in Restland Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, TX. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Sunday. Avis was born on February 9, 1925 in Lipscomb County, TX and passed away on August 14, 2014. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1947, she moved to Dallas, working as a journalist for Progressive Farmer Magazine from 1947 until 1958. She married Joe Pitts on May 14, 1950. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2007. She was a secretary for the Federal Government from 1972 until 1987. Avis has resided in Shreveport, LA since 2006 and was a member of Kingston Road Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe N. Pitts; father, Raymond Akers; mother, Alice Akers; sisters, Elizabeth Akers Statham, Melba Akers Hughes, and Lola Akers Frazee. Left to cherish her memory is son, Larry Joe Pitts and wife, Linda Moncrief Pitts; grandchildren, Katy and Eric Pitts.Rose-Neath Southside 2500 Southside Drive318-687-1256
