Shreveport, LA--Barney Lee Moore was born January 10, 1927 in McComb, Mississippi and passed away January 15, 2015, having just celebrated his 88th birthday in the company of his beloved family at his home. Visitation will held from 5-7 pm on Friday, January 16 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. A memorial service will begin at 4 pm on Saturday, January 17 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel.
Barney was the second son of humble and hard working parents Ruby Caraway and Benjamin Franklin Moore. His mother insisted on his education, and after his McComb High School football team won the state championship in 1944 and 1947, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi on a football scholarship. He had enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and took delight in recounting his WWII service in the Navy, when he worked on the crash crew as a firefighter on Ream Field in San Diego, "the best job in the military." In 1950, he married Betty Ann Sims of McComb and in 1953, on the happiest day of his life, his daughter Vickie Lee Moore Young was born.
His lifelong determination to protect and provide for his family took him from a minimum wage job as a tire changer at a McComb Firestone store to presidency of Moore's Firestone/Goodyear, the largest commercial tire dealer in the nation, which boasted "36 locations to serve you." He took great pride in providing income for the families of his 350 employees, their customer service, and the company's memorable advertising. "I ride on Moore's tires myself and I'm mighty proud of it." Barney Moore was a model 20th Century American entrepreneur who retired in 1990 to spend time with his family, visit every state in his motorhome, and plant and beautify his farm land, including planting an orchard of over 300 pecan trees.
After losing his first wife, Betty, of 46 years to cancer, he married Doll Martin Moore in 1997, with whom he spent nearly 18 happy years. In addition to traveling the nation, he spent his retirement with his daughter Vickie, son-in-law Paul Young, and his three grandchildren and their families: Ann Young and her wife Sara Shouse, John-Paul Young and his partner Brandon Fail, and Alex Young and his partner Krystal Plunkett, who all survive him. He is survived also by his siblings Benny Moore, F. D. Moore, and Bobbie Nell Templeton. He is also survived by the daughters and grandchildren of his second wife Doll, who are Kathy Herren, Elizabeth Bare (Dr. James Bare), Laurie Dove, Justin and Patrick Wheeler, Robby Dove, and Tucker Herren, Pam Comegys and her daughters Lillian Comegys and Emily Vigen (Eric Vigen). He was also devoted to his faithful housekeeper of 50 years, Josephine Nelson, and his beloved lapdog, Mitzi Lee Moore.
Pallbearers include Ann, John-Paul, Alex, Justin, Robby, and Paul. Honorary pallbearers are the Pelican Travelers Motorhome Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, 2307 Texas Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71103.
