Bert Woodley Mercer of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023 following a brief illness. Mr. Mercer was born in Elysian Fields, Texas on June 9, 1926. Bert was a World War II veteran, who was also an employee of SWEPCO at the Arsenal Hall Power Plant for 41 years. He was an avid hunter and gardener and also a longtime LSU fan.
Bert was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Solomon Mercer. Left to cherish his memory are his second wife, Mary Frances Mercer; three sons, Gary Mercer, Ronnie Mercer and Shea Mercer; two sisters, Betty Railey and Ella Mae Pearce; one brother-in-law, Harry Solomon three grandsons, Donnie Mercer, Kevin Mercer and Cade Mercer; one great-grandson, Dustin Mercer; one step-daughter, Ginger James and four step-sons, Jeff James, John James, Justin James and Jack James and numerous other family members.
Honoring Bert as pallbearers will be Cade Mercer, Dustin Mercer, Chris Glover, Jeff Kelly, Steve McDonald and Jon James.
The family suggests memorials may be made in Bert’s memory to Mt. Zion Cemetery Association, 1306 Holiday Place, Bossier City, Louisiana 71112.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held Thursday, May 25, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Mooringsport, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Reverend Kenny Joyner.
