Funeral services for Billie June Gates Slaughter, 84, will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 11708 Providence Road, Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at the Providence Cemetery, next door to the church.
A visitation will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath South, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Pastor James Cowley of Galax, Virginia.
June was born on January 27, 1939 to Woodrow Wilson Gates and Berniece Dawson Gates in Bogata, Texas and passed away Friday, November 10, 2023 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
June was a lifelong resident of Shreveport. She was a loving wife to her husband, Larry, a loving mother to her six children, and a loving Nana to her 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, and the companionship of her dog, Annie.
June is preceded in death by her husband, Larry O’Neil Slaughter; her parents, Woodrow Wilson Gates and Bernice Dawson Gates; her sister, Diane Gates Pittman; sister-in-law, Carol Gates; her daughter, Sylvia Slaughter-Joskiewich; and nephew, Samuel Hank Gravel.
She is survived by her son, Steve Slaughter (Bonnie), son, Jeff Slaughter (Kathy), daughter, Sheri Slaughter Cowley (James), son, Randell Wray Slaughter (Cindy), daughter, Shondell Slaughter Sanders (Brad), and son-in-law, Daniel Joskiewich. In addition, June is survived by 15 grandchildren including: Mack Slaughter (Ali), Kayleigh Slaughter Plette (Phillip), Justin Slaughter, Nick Slaughter, Courtney Cowley Grant (Bob), Nathan Cowley (Amanda), Micah Cowley (Karly), Noah Cowley, Braden Glasson (Taylor), Jared Glasson, Nicky Joskiewich, Toni Joskiewich, Olivia Slaughter, Cael Sanders and Coen Sanders; and seven great-grandchildren including: Kenzie Slaughter, Ollie Slaughter, Leo Plette, Stella Plette, Aniya Plette, Sadie James Grant, and Issac O’Neil Grant. She is also survived by her sister, Jill Gates Gravel (Sam); brothers, Jack Gates, David Gates (Bonnie); as well as brother-in-law, Virgil Pittman.
Honoring June as pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of The Glen Retirement System’s Memory Care Cottages for their care and compassion to June over the last two years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, PO Box 4196, Monroe, Louisiana 71211.
