A funeral service for Billy Wayne Montgomery, 87, will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Assembly of God, 700 US-80, Haughton, Louisiana. Burial will follow at Bellwood Cemetery in Natchitoches, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Haughton High School Gymnasium, 210 E. McKinley Ave., Haughton, Louisiana. Officiating the service will be Pastor Jeff Gravis and Randy Nichols.
Billy Wayne Montgomery was born on July 7, 1937, to George and Verda Montgomery in Provencal, Louisiana, and passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025, in Bossier City, Louisiana. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of service, leadership, and passion for education and athletics. His journey was one defined by unwavering dedication to his community and the countless lives he touched along the way.
Billy’s career exemplified his commitment to shaping future generations. He served as a coach, teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal, roles through which he mentored and inspired students for decades. Beyond education, he held the esteemed position of Louisiana State Representative and worked as a Project Coordinator for the Bossier Parish Police Jury, tirelessly striving to uplift his community and advocate for progress.
As a State Representative, Billy was instrumental in securing funds for critical community projects. His efforts led to the relocation and construction of the new Bossier Parish Community College, the establishment of the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home, and the expansion of Interstate 49 North to the Arkansas state line. These accomplishments have advanced education, honored veterans, and improved infrastructure, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
A proud graduate of Provencal High School, Billy pursued higher education at Northwestern State University and Louisiana Technical University, earning his master’s degree and beyond. His achievements in athletics were celebrated through numerous honors, including his induction into the ARK-LA-TEX Sports Museum of Champions, NSU Purple Line Alumni Hall of Distinction, the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame. These accolades stand as a testament to his profound impact on sports, education, and public service in the region.
Billy will be remembered as a leader, mentor, and trailblazer who brought passion and excellence to every endeavor he pursued. His contributions to education, athletics, and his community have left a lasting mark, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, George and Verda Montgomery, and nephew, Kevin Nichols. He is survived by his significant other, Susan M. Jorden; sons, Kipper W. Montgomery and wife, Dawn, and Trever Montgomery and significant other, Tara Illies; granddaughter, Grace Anne Montgomery; grandson, William Wolf, and wife, Katelynn; great-granddaughter, Ophelia Rose Wolf; granddaughter, Anna Marie Wolf; brothers, Doyle Montgomery, and wife, Penny, and Ronny Montgomery; sister, Dorothy Nichols, numerous nieces and nephews and first wife, Gwendolyn Duke.
Honoring Billy as pallbearers will be Julian Whittington, Billy Grisham, Emile Cordaro, Rick Gallot, John Alario, Bill Altimus, Mike McConathy, and Bobby Edmiston. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jap Gullat, Tommy Warner, Larry Strogen, Terry Lee, the Haughton High School Basketball Team, and the Lafayette High School Basketball Team.
The family would like to express special thanks to Billy’s sitters, Tina Benson and Mechi Carter. They are two angels who went above and beyond caring for and loving Billy. They would also like to thank the Columns of Bossier (Savannah Grand) for letting your home be our home. All of you are truly a special group of people. We were very blessed to be there.
