C. Lane Sartor

Memorial services celebrating the life of C. Lane Sartor will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, 520 Herndon St., Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Wybra Price, II and Rev. Mimi McDowell. There will be a reception in the church parlor immediately following the service. Private graveside services were previously held. Charles Lane Sartor, born December 3, 1921 the son of Dr. Emmett Alton Sartor and Addie May Lane Sartor, has been a resident of Shreveport since birth. He graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and attended Washington & Lee University, graduating with a B.A. degree in Geology. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity, serving as an officer and member of the Interfraternity Council. He also managed the Cross-country Track team and was a geology lab instructor. In June 1942 he enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Corps, (Ground School) U.S. Army Air Corps. After completing the Photo Laboratory Commander\'s courses in December, 1942, he was transferred to the air base at Courtland, Alabama, as base photo officer. After five months in that unit, he transferred to the Air Intelligence School for training as an aerial photo interpreter. In December 1943, he was posted overseas to Kunming, China, the 18^th Photo Intelligence Detachment, HQ 14^th Air Force, under General Claire Chennault. Later he was stationed in Chungking and Shanghai, ending his war service accompanying Chinese regiments up the coast of China. In January 1946 he returned to the United States where he joined the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Sartor was employed by Barnsdall Oil Company and later by Pan Am Southern Corporation. In 1954 he became associated with the Wheless Drilling Company and served them for 37 years as Exploration Manager, member of the Board of Directors, and Vice President of Tensas Delta Land Co. Upon retirement, he opened an office as an independent geologist in association with Ralph G. Richardson, managing their own oil and gas investments, as Sartor-Richardson, LLC. Mr. Sartor was also the director and officer of his family-owned business, the C.W. Lane Company, a real estate development and management corporation. Mr. Sartor was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Institute of Professional Geologists, the Shreveport Geological Society, the Montana Geological Society, the Independent Petroleum Association of America, the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association, the Louisiana Independent Oil and Gas Association, and the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies. Mr. Sartor was a Trustee of the Shreve Memorial Library and served on the Library Board of Control, as well as President of the Louisiana Library Foundation. Mr. Sartor received the Modisette Award from the Louisiana Library Association in 1994. Mr. Sartor was a member of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church. For almost 40 years he taught the Noel's Rasmussen and Men's Bible Class and also led a men's Bible study. Mr. Sartor was a member of many civic associations including The United Fund (Director and Vice-President), The Caddo Foundation for Exceptional Children (Director and Vice-President) the Shreveport Association for the Blind (President and Director), the American Cancer Society (board member), Goodwill Industries (board member), Shreveport Country Club (past President), Petroleum Club of Shreveport (past President) and the Mental Health Association (board member). He was also a Trustee of the William C. Woolf Foundation and a director of the Noel Foundation, Inc. Mr. Sartor was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, E. Alton Sartor, Jr and son-in-law, Wiley Hilburn, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gloria Sanderson Sartor, and three daughters, Ann Sartor Richardson and husband Ralph, Kate Sartor Hilburn and Dr. Sally Sartor and husband Rickey Womack. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer O'Driscoll, Dr. Rachel White, Amelie Walker-Yung and husband Jason, Samuel Richardson, David Richardson and wife Ashleigh, and Dr. Stephen Richardson and wife Candice; 6 great-grandchildren and nieces Elizabeth Hardin, Jean Paxton Hillman, nephews, Dr. Balfour Sartor and Dr. Oliver Sartor. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be John Guth, Wilbur Hirsch, Dr. Dick Langford, Buckner Ogilvie, Nick Wheless, Stacy Williams, members of Noel's Wednesday morning Bible Study and members of Noel's Rasmussen and Men's Bible Class and Morning Coffee Friends.
