Carolyn Joyce Dixon Flanagan was born to Virgil and Alma Dixon on September 8, 1933, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and passed away suddenly on Friday, December 1, 2023, in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Carolyn, Mimi, or Mom – that’s how she was known to her family and friends, enjoyed her time in high school as an active ROTC sponsor and the excitement of meeting her future husband, Guerdon Flanagan.  After graduating from Fair Park High School in 1951, Carolyn began training as an X-ray tech at Confederate Memorial Hospital, now Ochsner LSU.  She and Guerdon married on June 13, 1953.  Soon after, they traveled to Sumter, South Carolina, for Guerdon to continue his military service.  To stay busy, Carolyn worked part-time jobs at J.C. Penney and a photography studio. Upon returning to Shreveport, Carolyn was employed at Interstate Oil Company as a keypunch operator.  She continued working until the birth of her children Brenda and Jeff.  She took on a new role as a stay-at-home mom until they began school.  Her next career was working at the Caddo Parish Courthouse in the Tax Assessor’s Office/homestead exemptions.  In the late 70s she returned as a keypunch operator at U.G.C. Industries.  She completed her working career in the church office at Western Hills Baptist Church.

From birth, Carolyn attended Queensborough Baptist Church, where she made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, married Guerdon, and raised her family.  She was active in Sunday School and she and Guerdon worked Sunday nights with 12-year-olds in Baptist Training Union (BTU).  Later Queensborough transitioned to Willow Point Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School, serving as class president for several years.

She and Guerdon built their first home in Shreveport where they raised their children.  Many years later they built a home in the Benton community, and they joined Cypress Baptist Church where Carolyn enjoyed helping with luncheons and decorating.  Their last residence was built in Bossier “to be closer to the hospital.”  Carolyn lived there until her final move, five years ago, to The Blake Assisted Living facility.

Carolyn loved shopping, always wanting day-trip adventures with her friends to the surrounding areas of Dallas, Longview, and Tyler.  She was an excellent cook who loved decorating and entertaining during the holidays.  She also loved playing scrabble.  In the early years, she and Guerdon were on a couples’ bowling league and later she joined a ladies’ team.

Carolyn Flanagan was preceded in death by her husband, Guerdon Flanagan “2Pop” to the grands; parents, Virgil and Alma Hatcher Dixon, brother Virgil Dixon, Jr.; and in-laws, Robert and Ethel Flanagan.  Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Brenda Flanagan Williams and husband, Louis; son, Jeff Flanagan and wife, Norma; her loving grandchildren, Lori Wingard McDonald, Leigh Wingard Schroer and husband, Danny, Scott Flanagan and partner, Ryan Marquez, Kelly Alma Flanagan, and Hannah Williams Hyer; and her precious great-grandchildren, Cody and Brady McDonald and Daniel and Gracie Schroer.

Honoring Carolyn as pallbearers are Jeff Flanagan, Scott Flanagan, Louis Williams, Brad McDonald, Cody McDonald, Brady McDonald, Daniel Schroer, and Jim Flanagan.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Cypress Baptist Church Senior Adult Ministry, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the charity of your choice.

The Flanagan family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful doctors who cared for Carolyn:  Dr. Leslie Sewell, Dr. Michael Walton, Dr. Meghan Harris, and Dr. Michael Acurio.  Also, we are grateful for the compassionate, loving care she received from the staff, nurses, and personal assistants at The Blake Assisted Living facility and all the ladies from Louisiana Home Health.
