BOSSIER CITY, LA - A graveside service for Charles Edward Anderson, Sr. will be held at 10 am Friday, November 6, 2015 at Plain Dealing Cemetery in Plain Dealing, LA. Visitation will be 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City.
Charles was born on September 2, 1933 in Brown, AR to Floyd and Ruth Anderson and passed away on November 1, 2015 in Shreveport. He graduated from Plain Dealing High School in 1952 and went on to Louisiana Tech University where he played football as a tight end and punter and was on the track team. His senior year, he was co-captain of the football team, and he was even honored as an All-Conference and All-American football player. Upon graduation in 1956 he was drafted into the NFL by the Chicago Cardinals to be the punter. After spending a year in the NFL, he returned home to teach math and, of course, football! He spent 30 years in the educational field and even went on to earn his Master's in Education from Stephen F. Austin in 1967. He was never one to stop learning whether it be continuing his educational pursuits beyond his Master's degree or faithfully watching Jeopardy each afternoon (and correctly answering the majority of the questions).
While many of his former students may remember him as their teacher, coach, guidance counselor or principal, the rest of Bossier City will remember him as the owner (and primary cook) of the Sidetrack Restaurant on Benton Road. Many have proclaimed his red beans and rice to be the best they've ever had and others consider themselves lucky if they somehow managed to get ahold of the recipe. After faithfully waking up at 4 am and feeding most of Bossier City lunch for 12 years, he and Madeline (the primary dessert maker) sold the restaurant and retired...briefly. Charles, not being one for idle time, went on to work at Red Wing Shoe Store until he finally decided to retire...for good.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Gretchen Tatum; brother, Billy Anderson; sister-in-law, Joy Anderson; sister-in-law, Virginia Allen; and brother-in-law, Bob Horneman.
