Clyde Sneed, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and farmer, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side at the age of 90 on Friday, December 20, 2024. A lifelong resident of Many, Louisiana, Clyde was known for his kindness and generosity to those less fortunate and his unwavering dedication to his family and his work.
Born on October 30, 1934, Clyde met the love of his life, Peggy, while playing basketball at Many High School. They married on March 5, 1955 before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Together, they built a beautiful farm and life filled with love, resilience, and cherished memories. They raised two children, Phillip and Renee Sneed. They also raised their grandson, Phillip Sneed, Jr. who first called him “Papa Clyde”, which many who knew and loved him came to use. They were also proud grandparents of Janie Sneed and Noah Blackford, as well as proud great grandparents of Blake and Mason Sneed.
Clyde spent most of his life working the land as a farmer, a vocation that reflected his deep connection to nature and his steadfast work ethic. He was quite innovative. As a farmer, he discovered a hybrid Bermuda grass that he patented and named after his first grandson, “Lil Phil #1”. Before farming, he owned a lucrative sawmill. He was known for his shrewdness and generosity as a business owner, sharing profits with employees before this was common practice.
Clyde will be remembered for his inclusiveness, resourcefulness, quick wit, humility, stability, and his unwavering strength of character. He was the type of person who could build anything, including houses and barns for loved ones, and would choose to repair something over buying anything new. He valued hard work and honesty. Whether he was tending his land, sharing his unending wisdom, or pulling a prank, his presence brought comfort, joy, and laughter to all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Anders Sneed; his parents, Clyde and Bessie Sneed; his siblings, Arthur Sneed, Orene (Clifford) Harris, Loree (W.E.) Jackson, and Sue Sandel. He is survived by his son, Phillip Sneed and partner, Jessica Hardy; daughter, Renee Sneed and husband, Chuck Blackford; grandchildren, Phillip Sneed, Jr. and wife, Ashley, Janie Sneed, and Noah Blackford; great grandchildren, Blake and Mason Sneed; in-laws, Sandra and Louis Stewart, Helen Sneed, and Dewayne Sandel; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who will miss him dearly. The family would like to extend their thanks to Jennifer Wilkie and Patricia Goodman for their companionship and loving care.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.at Florien Cemetery, Highway 171, Florien, LA, Coordinates: 31.46575, -93.45592.
