Services for Colonel Roy A. Miller, USAF, Retired will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Shreveport's St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was member. Burial will follow at Rose-Neath Cemetery on Swan Lake Road, Bossier City. A visitation will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel on Airline Drive in Bossier City on Wednesday, July 27 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Col. Miller died on July 21, following a brief illness. He resided at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home for the preceding twenty months. Col. Miller retired from the U.S. Air Force with 30 years of active service. Born in Haskell, Oklahoma and raised on a farm near there, Roy, twin brother Robert and their sister Alice Mary as very young adults were swept up in world events of the time. An infantryman in the 45th Division, Oklahoma National Guard, Roy entered active service in the U.S. Army when the division was mobilized before World War II. During the war he became an enlisted pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a troop carrier pilot in the China-Burma-India Theater in 1943-44, receiving a regular officer's commission in 1947. He then served in combat troop carrier operations in the Korean War from 1950-52. From that time on his military career was one of increasing leadership and responsibility. From early flight instructorship, he then twice attended the Air War College in Montgomery, AL (1953 and 1963), The Air University of the USAF, and held combat crew, command and staff positions in B-47 and B-52 wings, and in Headquarters Second Air force of the Strategic Air Command. Finally, he served as a planner in the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at The Pentagon, Washington D.C. There, in the J-5 staff he analyzed and presented briefings and action papers for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the National Security Council on future U.S. strategic force levels and employment objectives. He was an active pilot for 25 years, including instructorship in the B-52H aircraft. Retired in 1971, Col. Miller continued his association with the military community by membership in The Retired Officers Association, the Air Force Association, and the Claire Chennault 51st Flight, The Order of Daedalians. His personal interests included history, gardening, and bass and trout fishing. Col. Miller was a graduate of The George Washington University (BA 1966) and Louisiana State University (MBA 1976). His military decorations and awards were: Legion of Merit Medal; Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters; Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters; Meritorious Service Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Longevity Service Ribbon with silver and bronze oak leaf clusters; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars; World War II Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal with Japan clasp; National Defense Medal with bronze star; Korean Service Medal with bronze star; United Nations Service Medal; and the Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea. In 2015 he received the State of Louisiana Veteran's Honor Medal from Governor Bobby Jindal. Preceded in death by wife Marie Louise (Eleazar) Miller, and daughter Michelle Miller-Allen, he is survived by son Laurence Miller of Shreveport; son Lyle Miller and his wife Edith Miller of Midlothian, TX; granddaughter Laine Miller, of Dallas, TX; twin brother Robert Miller of Glencoe, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
