SHREVEPORT, LA - David Gerald "Jerry" Burton went to be with the Lord on June 25, 2014. He was born December 11, 1940 in Shreveport, LA to Delbert and Juanita Losey Burton. Visitation will be Friday, June 27, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Northwood High School Gym. Funeral services will be at the same location at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014 with the coaches, former coaches and athletes of Northwood High School officiating . Interment will follow at Rose-Neath Cemetery, Bossier City. Following an illustrious Hall of Fame football career at Northwestern State University and two years as a defensive back for the Los Angeles Rams, Coach Burton became a legendary high school football coach, spanning six decades of excellence. He first coached at Bossier High School in 1965, later becoming head football coach at C.E. Byrd High School, and finally becoming head coach at Northwood High School in 1983. During his tenure, Northwood became a perennial fixture in the playoffs. In addition, he coached track and had many state champions. After his retirement in 1998, the football stadium at Northwood was renamed Jerry Burton Stadium in 2008, honoring him for the countless lives influenced by this great man. Coach Burton is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ronnie and his children, Kelly Tullis, Shannon Clark and Chip Burton. Also his life is remembered by his grandchildren, Cody Gibbs, Dakota Craig, Brock Bonds, Drake Burton, and Colby Burton. Also surviving him is mother-in-law, Cora Browning; sister, Irene Rogers and husband Jim and sister-in-law, Charlie Reeves. Coach is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carol Wiggs. Pallbearers will be Brock Bonds, Cody Gibbs, Chip Burton, Drake Burton, Larry Bagley, and Mike Poole. In lieu of flowers, a tribute in his name would be greatly appreciated by his family to help defray funeral expenses. A memorial fund in the name of Jerry Burton has been established at Regions Bank.
