GREENWOOD, LA - Derrell Witteborg Sorrell wife of George M. (Sonny) Sorrell Sr. passed away on June 9, 2014 in Shreveport, LA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Chad Hardbarger, Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Derrell was born in Wharton, TX on June 6, 1935. Then, while residing in Galveston her love of the beach and ocean grew to be a special part of her life, always returning for a visit with her children and grandchildren. After moving to Shreveport as a teen, she and George became high school sweethearts graduating from Fair Park High School in 1953. She worked for United Gas until they were married on June 30, 1956 at Ingleside Baptist Church. While still living in Shreveport, Derrell and George had three children and the pride and joy of their lives. The love they had for their children extended to raising and riding horses and livestock which resulted in 4-H projects which brought the family so much pleasure. In 1975, the Sorrell family moved to Houston, TX. Derrell worked for Spring ISD. They were blessed with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. After retiring in 1989, Derrell and George moved to Center, TX with their son and three of their grandchildren where they began to work with many school activities and the 4-H horse project. In 2004, Derrell and George returned to Shreveport in the Greenwood area.
Derrell was preceded in death by her father, E.F. Witteborg Sr. and mother Norma Owens Witteborg. She is survived by her husband, George Sorrell, Sr.; daughter, Diana Porter and husband, Mike of Shreveport; sons, George Sorrell Jr. of Austin, TX, Grant Sorrell of Cambodia; brother, E.F. (Sonny) Witteborg and wife, Jo Ann of Shreveport; grandchildren, Jason and wife, Amanda, Marcy, Ashley and husband, Patrick, Boone, Luc, and Landry; great-grandchildren, Adam, Hunter, Nathan, Leah, Presley, Jackson, and Saylor; her dearest friend, Beverly Hillhouse that was with her always; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A special thanks to Dr. Craig Miller and staff, Dr. James Smith and the Collins class of Emmanuel Baptist Church that was so kind to her during her lengthy illness.
Pallbearers will be Floyd Hillhouse, Charles Hickman, Gary Johnson, Richard \"Skip\" Shirley, James Howard and David Hanson.
