After graduating from Farmerville High School in 1939; he spent the next two summers working for O. O. Cummings Ice Plant in Farmerville. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII, enlisted from December 3, 1942 to December 6, 1945. Don earned his B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Louisiana State University; and earned his Ed. S.degree at Peabody Institute. He began his teaching career at Greenwood High School in 1945. He spent four years at Blanchard Junior High School as principal; from 1953-1967 he served as the Assistant Superintendent in charge of Curriculum and Instruction for Caddo Parish School Board; from 1967-1973 he was the Superintendent of Caddo Parish Schools; and worked as Headmaster of Southfield School from 1973 until he retired in 1978. During his retirement he taught at Centenary College of Louisiana for three years, worked as Publisher's Representative for Instructional materials in the state of Louisiana, he also spent one year as Real Estate Associate and eight years as a Realtor. Being an active member in society was something Don was extremely passionate about and he took great pride in his many accomplishments. President of Louisiana School Superintendents Association, Teacher of the Year in Caddo Parish, Administrator of the Year in Caddo Parish, President of Caddo Parish Administrators Club, recipient of the Liberty Bell Award are just a few of the many honors he experienced throughout his lifetime. Along with his teaching career; Don was also involved in several community activities such as, Director of the Shreveport Association for the Blind, Children and Family Services, Y.M.C.A, and a member of Shreveport Kiwanis Club. He served in all offices except Secretary and Lt. Governor of Division 9. He was also an active member of the Broadmoor Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, a Teacher of Teachers, Deacon, and served as Chairman for the Board of Deacons, Board of Directors and the Building Committee. Every person who knew him experienced his helpful and kind nature. It is a fair assessment that he left this world a better place. He enjoyed growing roses and vegetables. He was the best father his two sons could have ever asked for.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Cora Kennedy; his older brother, Charles Kennedy; his younger sister, Happy Roberts; and his lovely and loving wife, Darline Elizabeth Corley Kennedy; they were able to travel to many foreign countries together, including Israel. Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, D. Lee, Jr. and wife, Cecilia Martinez-Kennedy and Kenney Corley; several nieces and two nephews. Vicki Kennedy, his loving niece, visited him often from Farmerville, as his health declined. Sons also extend appreciation to the staff at The Arbor in Bossier City and Gamble Guest Care at Spring Lake in Shreveport. Honoring Don as pallbearers will be Kenney C. Kennedy, D. Lee Kennedy, Jr., B.L. "Buddy" Shaw, Randy Hughens, Patrick Spell, and Peter Sartori.
