HOMER, LA: Dora June Fleming McCullin, 86, left us on January 27, 2017 to be with the Lord and the saints. All her life she gave generously of her time, her talent and treasure. She was, in the best sense of the word, a \"church lady.\" Her life was a witness to her faith. She played the piano and organ at church, visited the sick and the old, opened her home to those who needed a safe sanctuary, worked with the homeless, was ordained as a deacon at Oakhurst Baptist Church. In Homer at First Baptist she taught Sunday School, chaired the flower committee, restarted the bereavement committee, and made prayer shawls for the sick and hurting. She was there at the launch of the Thrift Store and her leadership guided it for years. She was devoted to her family. Charles, her husband of 62 years, preceded her in death. Their love survives through their daughters June Smith, Resa and Richard Ott, Robin and Don Self and succeeding generations Daniel Smith, Catherine Ott Griffith and Greg Griffith, Carolyn Ott, Michelle and George Taylor, and Austin Taylor. She was so very proud of the character they exhibited and what they accomplished. Don\'t ask her about her grandchildren because she would tell you. Her love of the land and all that grows on it, except for grasshoppers, came from her parents, Holstun and Sunshine Fleming and a childhood with her beloved sister Sunshine Wilkinson in the country outside of Gibsland. She was the first female to be admitted to the college of agriculture at Louisiana Tech. Her major was botany. Her backyard was a registered naturalist site, even with all the cats. One of the major passions of her life was flowers, specifically bulbs. Her yards were always beautiful, rich with color. She was a Master Gardener, active in several garden clubs and always happy to share her knowledge and her bulbs. Her life and passions flowed through her amazing hands. If she could read about it, she could do it: crochet, sewing, knitting, quilting, macrame. She created beautiful things - quilts, heirloom dresses, wall hangings, bedspreads - and shared with family and friends. She was a teacher. She went back to school when her children started school and taught first grade for over 20 years, most of that time with underserved populations in New Orleans and Atlanta. She taught in Head Start in its very first year. She taught piano in the front room of her house. As she loved flowers, please feel free to give them in her honor. Contributions may be made to the Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Baptist Church, the National Wildlife Federation or the Baptist Children\'s Home. She never understood the impact she had, the difference she made in the world, in our lives. We will miss her so.
Memorial service was held Monday, January 30, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church at 406 W. Main Street, Homer, Louisiana. The family receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
