Shreveport: Dorris Givens Mounce went home to her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the age of 100. Visitation will be 10:00 - 11:00 on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Broadmoor Baptist Church Parlor, 4110 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA and a service to celebrate her life will follow the visitation, at 11:00 in Broadmoor Baptist Church Memorial Chapel on April 11th and burial will be at Forest Park Cemetery, Shreveport. Dr. Tom Harrison of Broadmoor Baptist Church will officiate, with Marcia Harper at the piano and Rev. Tim Magill soloist.
Born December 15, 1914 in Arcadia, Louisiana to Frank Allen and Mattie Madden Givens. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 1/2 years, Charlie E. Mounce, sister: Marie (\"Sister\") Harris, brothers: Thomas, Allen (\"Red\"), F.A, Douglas, David Givens and Great-Grandson Andy Brewer. Mother was the last living child of Frank and Mattie Givens and she died 19 years and 1 month from the day Daddy was buried.
Dorris was a longtime resident of Shreveport. Growing up in Queensborough Baptist Church, she was a member of Highland Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church for 40+ years. God, her church and her family were the most important things to Mother. She was a true believer in our Lord, Jesus Christ, knowing that only by His Grace was she a saved Christian. Mother\'s faith in Jesus Christ provides our family with peace, knowing that she is truly \"Home\" and is reunited with her love ones. What a wonderful Easter season to meet her Savior.
She played on the Fair Park High School girls' basketball team and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1932. She married Charlie E. Mounce in 1933 and they were together for 62 1/2 years until Charlie\'s death in 1996. She ran the family Jewelry Business while Charlie E. was serving in the Navy during WWII. Charlie was a manufacturing jeweler in Shreveport for 65 years.
Dorris loved music and to sing. Some of her favorite songs were \"The Lord\'s Prayer\", \"How Great Thou Art\", \"Just a Closer Walk With Thee\", \"Have Faith In God\", and last \"Five Foot Two\". She designed and sewed childrens clothes. She loved to draw and paint and studied water color under Shreveport artist Van Smith. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her corn bread dressing, sour cream pound cake and pecan pie. She loved to entertain at home. She always was studying her Bible and taking notes from Christian sermons. For her and Charlie's 50th wedding anniversary, her girls sent them to Atlanta, GA to meet Charles Stanley and attend his church service. She loved any courses that challenged and improved her mind. With her love for sewing, cooking, decorating and remodeling, her math skills were phenomenal. She would rarely pass up a bridge game whether it was with the "Harritt Girls", at the Shreveport Country Club, East Ridge Country Club, at friend's houses, at home or out of the daily newspaper. She and Charlie loved to dance at the Elks Club and with the Omega Club. She and Charlie were members of the Elks Club, the Omega Club, the Shreveport Country Club, East Ridge Country Club, The Cotillion and The Demoiselle Club. She was also a member of The Women's Department Club. They both loved to travel, traveling the world and traveled by motor coach all over North America.
Dorris passed on to her girls, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchildren her artistic eye in drawing, painting , sewing and decorating, love for playing cards, board games and doing jigsaw puzzles, love of music and dance, southern cooking, traveling and the art of southern party giving.
Dorris was blessed with and is survived by three daughters: Dorris Ann Mounce Brewer Ozkan of Pea Ridge, AR, Kay Mounce Poolman and husband John of Lenexa, KS and Marcia Mounce of Shreveport; two Granddaughters: Annette Brewer Beard of Pea Ridge, AR and Kristy Poolman Webb and husband Travis of KS, four Grandsons: Michael Brewer, Charlie Mounce Brewer and wife Belinda of Pea Ridge, AR, Ric Poolman and wife Ruth of Singapore, Tim Poolman and wife Kerry of Overland Park, KS; seventeen Great Granddaughters, twelve Great Grandsons, two Great-Great Granddaughters, and eight Great-Great Grandsons. Special family friends: Dr. Ray and Ann Carolyn Reid of Tampa, FL, Carol Brown and Florida Musgrove of Shreveport.
