Dorvil Kent Barnett Dorvil Kent Barnett passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on August 22, 2014. A service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday August 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Couch Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Shreveport. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Carl Rhodes. The family will receive friends in the Church Parlor prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. A private burial will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park, Monroe, Louisiana. Dorvil was born in Crossett, Arkansas on August 30, 1927. When he was a young child, he moved with his family to Sterlington, Louisiana and graduated from Ouachita High School in 1944. Immediately thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served in the Pacific Theater through the end of WWII. He later served in the Korean War at the Naval Reserve Station in Helena, Arkansas. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sue Ann Miles Barnett. They were married on November 25, 1951. He attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Tech University where he studied engineering sciences. Dorvil began working for Arkla Gas Company after college and worked there until his retirement in 1985. While at Arkla, he worked as a Construction Manager, supervising the construction of numerous transmission stations throughout the South and Southwest from the 1950's through the 1980's. Dorvil, or DK, as he was affectionately known, will always be remembered as a loving, kind, caring husband, father, granddaddy and friend. He and Sue Ann were truly blessed to share 62 beautiful years of marriage, and to celebrate that love with their beloved son, Darrell and his family. Dorvil was especially proud of his grandchildren and always enjoyed attending all of their activities and athletic events. Over the years, Dorvil and Sue Ann took pride in training Belgian Sheepdogs and were known throughout North Louisiana for their skills in dog obedience training. They shared these skills with many through their work in teaching dog obedience training classes. Dorvil was an active Member of First United Methodist Church and the Co-Wed Sunday School Class. Dorvil was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Barnett and Effie Jeffress Barnett, his son, Dorvil Kent Barnett, Jr., and his brother, Drexel Barnett and sister-in-law, Billie Jean Barnett. Survivors include his son, Darrell Stone Barnett, M.D., and wife Kelly Quinn Barnett, and his grandchildren, Darrell Stone Barnett, Jr., Charlotte Elizabeth Barnett, Colleen Evelyn Barnett and three nieces. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Harold Golden, Shannon Dumas, and the members of the Co-Wed Sunday School Class. The family expresses their sincere thanks to Harold and Lucy Golden and Cathy Martin for their loving kindness and care. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eternal Flame Fund at First United Methodist Church, 500 Common St., Shreveport, LA 71101, Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3100 Samford Ave., Shreveport, LA 71103, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
