SHREVEPORT, LA -Memorial services for Dr. Ben R. Shumway will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel with military honors. Officiating will be Chaplain Larry Bass. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Dr. Ben R. Shumway, 90, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, November 24, 2014, after a lengthy illness. He was born and lived his entire life in Shreveport, LA.
After retiring from Riley Beaird, Dr. Shumway received his Master's Degree in Psychology. He devoted many hours at Charter Forest and Manor Substance Abuse Center. He worked with counseling adolescents.
Dr. Shumway served in the U.S. Air Force and saw combat in the South Pacific during WWII. He was shot down behind enemy lines in the jungle and evaded capture for a week by the monkeys warning him of enemy patrols nearby as he made his way safely back to his own lines. He was a member of American Legion, masons, Shriners, Moose lodge, Big Buck Hunting Club and the VFW.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Loraine "Meme" Shumway; daughters, Carolyn Peace and husband Roy of Vivian, LA and Kathy Tatum and husband Sidney of Mansfield, LA. He leaves 6 grandchildren, Dana L. Hartsfield, Kimberly Gallaspy, Lanessa Peace, Cambrie Peace, Cara Peace, and Cavin Peace; 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Dr. Shumway loved and will be sorely missed by his little dog, Scrappy.
