Dr. David Thomas Henry passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2024 in his home. He was in the loving care of his wife, Lisa Myers Henry, daughter, Wendy Harris Henry and son, James Patrick Henry.
Dr. Henry was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on November 9, 1938 to Floyd Thomas Henry and Nema Mae Pugh Henry, both of Shreveport. His boyhood home was Shreveport, and he attended Fair Park High School. He joined the Navy after high school serving in Corpus Christi, Texas and Naples, Italy before returning to complete his undergraduate education at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. While at NSU, Dr. Henry earned admission to the prestigious Blue Key National Honor Fraternity. He then went on to complete a Medical Doctorate at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans where he graduated with honors.
Following a family practice residency in Shreveport, Dr. Henry returned to practice family medicine in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he also delivered many babies. He later served on the faculty of Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport before returning to his true love of family practice, founding Family Medical Center in Shreveport. Dr. Henry was a leader in Shreveport medicine for more than 43 years. Dr. Henry achieved Board Certification in Geriatrics, Family Medicine, and Hospital Administration. He took pride in assisting patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s and established special calm rooms in his practice to help patients experience less anxiety during a visit to the doctor. His love of geriatrics gave him a unique ability to care for elders in the community and to comfort their families.
Dr. Henry loved gardening. Many friends benefited from his delicious home grown tomatoes, squash, peas and cantaloupe. He was frequently found on his tractor around his farms in both Louisiana and Arkansas. When he had hens, fresh eggs by the dozen were always shared. Dr. Henry was a self-taught artist in the medium of chalk, watercolor and oil on canvas. His art was displayed at Live Oak Retirement Center and Shreveport Civic Center. He won prizes at the Caddo Council on Aging Art Competition. He loved cooking and enjoyed playing guitar. He loved single malt scotch and fine wine. He was the proud owner of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and proudly used the email of bikerdocmd. He and Lisa experienced traveling the US and the world.
Dr. Henry is survived by his wife, Lisa Myers Henry; his children and stepchildren, Karen Richards and husband, Bobby, Evalyn Hogan and husband, Shannon, James Henry and fiancé, Wendy, Wendy Harris Henry, Megan Coston, Heidie Cumbie and husband, Brian, Chris Bamburg and wife, Shannon; 16 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He has brothers from another mother, Tim Turner, Gary McWilliams and John Joyce. He will be remembered with love by many colleagues, close friends, and family members throughout the Ark-La-Tex.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Willis-Knighton Hospice of Louisiana, Christina Graham, Dr. Robert Savory, Dr. Jack Berg, Harold Grant, Ernie Nelson and many others.
Services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Kilpatrick’s Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St., Shreveport, Louisiana. A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 7, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Officiating the Pastor Gary McWilliams.
A memorial park bench has been placed on the path at Betty Virginia Park where he enjoyed many hours of play and fun in his youth.
