Dr. Gamble was born in Mansfield, La., on July 29, 1923. He graduated from Longstreet High School in 1940 and attended Louisiana Tech University for three years before serving in World War II from 1943-1946. During that time, he graduated from The Navy Midshipman's School at Columbia University in New York, and was Officer in Charge of a Landing Craft Tank in the European Theatre.
Post-war, Dr. Gamble entered Loyola University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, graduating in 1950. He practiced dentistry in Mansfield for more than 46 years, and was a 50-year member of the American Dental Association, the Louisiana Dental Association, and the Northwest Dental Association. Dr. Gamble loved his many patients from Mansfield and the surrounding community, and his patients appreciated not only his dental skills but also his quick wit and kind nature. Dr. Gamble was proud to make Mansfield his home, and he devoted himself to being an active leader in the community.
He is a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Mansfield and served twice as its Chairman of the Board and in numerous other capacities. He was a 47-year member of The Mansfield Rotary Club and The Mansfield Country Club, and he was Chairman for the Cancer Drive in DeSoto Parish. After retirement, Dr. Gamble relocated to Shreveport, where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an active member of The Shreveport Syndicate, a former member of the University Club, Petroleum Club, Plantation Club, Cotillion Club, and a past President of the Cotillion Duchess Club. He was an active member of the Barksdale Eagles for many years.
Above all, Dr. Gamble was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife of 63 years, Lyndal Prine Gamble, traveled the world together, embarking on countless adventures. The couple were known for the wonderful parties and celebrations they hosted, their many social engagements, and treasured their time with each other. As well, Dr. Gamble enjoyed gardening and a good round of golf.
Preceding Dr. Gamble in death were his parents Albert Jones Gamble and Ima Horn Gamble, and his brother Clarence Gamble.
Dr. Gamble is survived by his wife Lyndal; his son Hollis Craig Gamble, Jr., of Shreveport; his daughter Lisa Gamble Clark, of Baton Rouge; and his three precious granddaughters Hollis Anne (Holly) Clark, Elise Katherine Clark, and Katherine Anne (Katie) Clark. He is also survived by his brother Jerry Gamble of Grand Cane, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Jamie Martin for the outstanding care provided to Dr. Gamble for the past several years. And to all those who gave him special care and attention, especially Susan Brown and Ron Grassi of the VA, the family expresses sincere gratitude.
Pallbearers are: Marvin Crain, Hubert Gleason, John Odom, John Price, Dr. Perry Hollembeak, Dr. Robert Barrett, David Oliver, and Rex Tamplin. Honorary Pallbearers are: Harry Hobbs, Dr. Kenneth LaFleur, Dr. Oscar Waldrep, and Members of the Shreveport Syndicate.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Dr. Carl Rhoads of First United Methodist Church, Shreveport. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. in Grand Cane Cemetery, Grand Cane, LA. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday prior to the service in the chapel at Rose-Neath.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to Grand Cane Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 18, Grand Cane, LA 71032, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
