Edith Merret Murray

Edith Merret Murray went to her heavenly home on January 31, 2025, at the age of 103 years old. She was born October 8, 1921, in Shreveport, Louisiana to Orion Carter Merret and Katie Boykin Merret.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Orion and Katie Merret, as well as her sisters, Elizabeth Merret Barnes, May Merret Franks, and Garland Merret Rhodes; infant brother, Carter Merret; sons, Jackie L. Jones and Charles W. Adams; husbands, Andrew Jackson Jones, Hugh Dell Adams, and James V. Murray; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Barksdale Adams; niece, Johnnette Anderson Phillips; and nephew, Harold Anderson. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Roland Dell Adams and his wife, Lucille, of Keithville, Louisiana; daughter, Andrea Jones Cooper, and her husband, Donald Ray Cooper, of Zwolle, Louisiana; grandchildren, Jeff, Mark, Yvette, Kenny, Donna, Kelley, Kristy, and Kimberly; and a host of great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Edith graduated from Fair Park High School in 1939 and later attended Meadows-Draughan Business College. She had a career in the finance industry. At age 50, Edith went back to school along with her sister, May, and earned her LPN Nursing Degree. She worked at Shreveport Blood Center and Willis-Knighton Hospital until she retired and moved to Lake Bistineau, where she grew a garden and tended her flowers. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Doyline Baptist Church. She read her Bible daily and loved attending church and Sunday school. She was a friend to all animals and always had a dog or two that she cared for.

In 2013, after suffering health issues, she moved to Summerfield Estates Retirement in Shreveport, LA. She enjoyed making new friends, the luxury of a great meal, and, as she would say, “no dishes to wash.” She looked forward to Monday nights and Mr. Moe’s evening of gospel music plus all the other activities. While living at Summerfield, she attended Keithville Methodist Church with her son, Charles, until his passing on July 4, 2019. In January 2022, she became a resident of Garden Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she continued to live until the Lord called her home, Friday, January 31, 2025.

At Edith's request, there will be a graveside service held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Park East Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Ave., Shreveport, LA. Great-nephew, Reverend John Anderson will lead the service along with Brother Marty Williams.

Honoring Edith as pallbearers will be Don Cooper, Keith Kelly, Jonathan Metcalf, and Carter Anderson. Jimmy Anderson will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

The family wishes to thank all those along her life’s journey who helped her, especially those in her last years at Summerfield Estates Retirement and Garden Park Nursing and Rehabilitation.

In lieu of flowers, she requests that you tell someone today about the Lord and His love for all and love your family. Donations can be made to Sabine Humane Society Animal Shelter, 520 McDonald Drive, Many, Louisiana 71449.
