SHREVEPORT, LA- A memorial service for Edwina Caraway Murphy, 90, will be held at First United Methodist Church at the Head of Texas Street in Shreveport, LA at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Officiating will be Dr. Carl Rhoads, First United Methodist Church minister. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery in Homer, LA at 2:30 p.m.
Edwina was born December 27, 1923, in Homer, LA and died on June 6, 2014 in Shreveport, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Milton Caraway; husband, William T. "Pete" Murphy; and daughter, Ila Ann Green. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Russo and husband, John; one son, Milton "Mike" Murphy; one grandson, Gary Drew Delaney; one brother, Larry Mahaffey; special friends Phillip and Dorothy Semon, and numerous other cousins and friends.
She graduated from Golden Meadow High School, Golden Meadow, LA and Soule College, New Orleans, LA. For twenty-one years she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. She was also a member of the Adelphi Sunday School Class and Beta Chi Chapter of the Houston Delphian Society, University of Houston.
In July, 1991, she retired from the Pasadena Independent School District, Pasadena, Texas, as Manager of the Transportation Department, and moved to Shreveport to be near her children. She joined the First United Methodist Church of Shreveport and became a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class.
Special thanks go to her doctors; Ricky Jones, Paul Schuler, Kamlesh Jani, Prakash Manapragada and their nurses. A very special thanks goes to Lorrie Nunley and all her friends at Azalea Estates Assisted Living, where she was selected the 2014 Mardi Gras Queen. In addition, she was also a Diamond Plus Member of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, having been on more than 30 cruises, and will be missed by all of her cruising "buddies".
Pallbearers honoring Mrs. Murphy will be Wayne Doughty, Frank Halbur, Jack Harrison, Ray Osbon, and Kenneth White. Honorary pallbearer will be T.M. "Marshall" Swann.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1567, Shreveport, LA 71165-1567, or the charity of your choice.
