Funeral services for Elizabeth “Betty” Earline Posey Gentry, 95, will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, Louisiana. Burial will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery, 4000 Meriwether Rd. in Shreveport. A visitation will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Officiating the service will be Rev. Chad Hardbarger.
Betty was born on September 19, 1928 in El Dorado, Arkansas to Robert Earl and Mamie Evans Posey and passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 in North Richland Hills, Texas.
Betty, after moving as a young child from Arkansas, grew up in Mansfield, Louisiana where she graduated from high school in 1945. She then took special classes in shorthand and typing and worked for Nabor’s Trailers in the shipping department. That is where she met her husband’s father and ultimately, Vernon, whom she married in 1949. Thereafter, they moved to Shreveport where they established their long-time home. While there, she worked for the Hunter Oil Company as Executive Secretary to Mr. Hunter until her retirement in 1993. In 2020, Betty moved to Texas to be close to her daughter, Beverly. She lived happily there for almost three and a half years, where she was able to spend more time with the grandchildren and see two great grandchildren born. She also had warm and sweet relationships with her friends in assisted living.
Of course, over the years, Betty had an active church life with Vernon at both Southside Baptist and Emmanuel Baptist churches, during which time she helped with the Sunday school class, church fellowships and enjoyed social time with the famous “Sewing Club”. Mom could be seen every day reading her Open Windows devotional and praying. What a wonderful example she gave to the whole family as a God-centered woman! She was a great cook, a faithful wife and homemaker, while also working a full-time job. She will be dearly missed.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Ora Gentry; parents, Robert and Mamie; her son, Robert Wayne Gentry, Sr.; brothers, Robert E. Posey, and James L Posey; sisters, Lyntine Posey Ricks; Doris Lee Posey McCuller, Louise Posey Odom, Myra Posey Myers and Helen Faye Posey Radford. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Beverly Gentry Hallett and husband, Charles; grandchildren, Robert Wayne Gentry, Jr. and wife, Jennifer, Joshua Daniel Hallett and wife, Thuy, Jared Addison Hallett and wife, Sara; three great grandchildren (Trevor, Ben and Catherine); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honoring Betty as pallbearers will be Charles Hallett, Billy Radford, William Valentine, David Posey, Eddie Myers, and Tim Myers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Robert Gentry, Jr, Joshua Hallett, Jared Hallett, Jim Radford (Slim), Richard Valentine and Craig Valentine.
The family suggests memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1710 McArthur Dr., Mansfield, Louisiana 71052 or Emmanuel Baptist Church, 5850 Buncombe Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana 71129.
