Elizabeth Rosella "Rosie" Wood July 12, 1927- May 13, 2024
Elizabeth Rosella "Rosie" Wood was born July 12, 1927 in Springfield, Illinois to Hubert D. Thomas and Ava Thomas Weber. Rosie died on May 13, 2024 at age 96.
Rosie was married to Jim, the love of her life, for 69 years. Their romance and partnership were an inspiration for everyone who knew them. She was his support as 'secretary' and 'hostess' as Jim built the first State Farm Insurance presence in North Louisiana. They were members of Broadmoor United Methodist Church where she held leadership and teaching roles, organizing a Layette Ministry for LSU Hospital, Bible study, art, exercise and Sunday School/MYF classes.
Throughout her life, Rosie loved learning new subjects and was eager to share her interests with others. She tutored subjects from reading to math and worked for Literacy Volunteers with numerous students, some of whom she tutored from illiteracy into college.
In her late 40s Rosie determined to resume her college studies, completing a Bachelor's in Fine Arts at LSUS. She was Artist-in-Residence at four Caddo Parish schools, creating a curriculum and teaching a series of lessons for elementary and middle school classes called "Art and Math."
As a committed mother, Rosie was a Girl Scout leader and PTA President. Many young women looked to Rosie as a role model for their own lives. She set an example by listening attentively with an open mind and heart, giving positive and love-based advice. Her philosophy in life was to be kind and find someone to help every day.
Rosie was predeceased by her parents; her three brothers, Archie, Gene and Glenn; her husband, James William "Jim" Wood; brother-in-law, Bob Wood, and her son, James Robert "Jimmy" Wood.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Jean Wood Snell (Larry "Pete" Snell); her son, Thomas William Wood (Cynthia George Wood) and daughter-in-law, Sally Lyons Wood. Her grandchildren, James Jefferson "Jeff" Snell (Sheri Thompson), Stafford Wood and William Nicholas "Nik" Snell (Anne Buchta); great-grandchildren, Quinn Elizabeth Kendall, Steven Nicholas Kendall and Adeline James Snell; and her loving nieces and nephews, and extended family. Her dear friends, Ella Holden and Kathy French, have visited her daily for Scrabble games, hymn singing, Bible discussions and loving conversation for years.
The funeral will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 3715 Youree Dr. Shreveport, Louisiana 71105, at 2 pm Thursday, May 16, 2024. Visitation begins at the Church at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Broadmoor UMC or www.broadmoorumc.org.
