Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 4, at Ashland Baptist Church with Rev. Dave Moore, Rev. James Lovell, and Rev. Donald Robinette officiating. She was born December 8, 1921, in the Harvey Community of Red River Parish. She was a long time child care provider for several children in the Ashland community. She was also a long-time member of Ashland Baptist Church where she taught the Beginners and Primaries Sunday School class for several years. She loved and spoiled all the children she kept and taught.

Mrs. Ethel is survived by her only child, Jackie Nelson and wife Addie Grace Nelson of Haughton, La, one grandson Jeffrey W. Nelson of Ashland, one granddaughter Jennifer Martin and husband Donnie of Natchez, La, two great-grandsons Wyatt Nelson and Waylon Nelson, one sister-in-law Linda Bolyer and husband Charles Wayne of Ashland, La, and brother-in-law Olan Thomas of Marshall, TX. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Mrs. Ethel's passions included reading her bible and telling bible stories to the children she kept and taught in Sunday School. She enjoyed raising chickens and cooking and canning the vegetables her and Mr. Red grew in their garden. On any given summer day, you could find Mrs. Ethel shelling peas or making cream style corn. She also had a niche for making fruit preserves and jelly. Mrs. Ethel was also known for her quilting and sewing quilt tops in which she sold to a host of people through the years. Her prize quilt was the one she made with all of her relatives names on it. She was truly a person who held her family, friends, and simple pleasures of life as most important.
Mrs. Ethel was quite a trooper when she was told she could no longer live at her home and would make her new home at Natchitoches Community Care Center. She never once complained. The family would like to thank with great gratitude the Natchitoches Community Care Center Staff for the loving care they showed to Mrs. Ethel everyday.
