A funeral service for Gene Edward Block, 67, will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City. Officiating the service will be Pastor Hamilton.
Gene was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to his mother, Louise Block, who preceded him in death. He grew up with his sisters and a brother. He attended school and was of the Catholic faith. Upon graduation he joined the United States Air Force in 1975 and was eventually stationed in Bossier City, Louisiana at Barksdale Air Force Base. This is where he met the love of his life, his wife of 41 years, Idell whom he cherished deeply.
Gene loved to cook for his wife, and it was the best food ever. He was a chef at heart and not only cooked for his wife but also for the community, firing up the grill and cooking all day. Often times the neighbors would smell the wonderful food he was grilling, and they would bring their meat over for him to grill. Some would even bring over frozen meats, but he never complained, he would season, grill and deliver the delicious food all with love for his neighbors before his illness.
Gene was quite the mechanic, working on many of the neighbors’ cars only charging the minimum fee, operating in love for his neighbors. His wife always made sure he had the very best, state-of-the-art tools to perform the acts of kindness and love. He will surely be missed.
Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Block, and his sister. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Idell Block of Bossier City, LA; sisters-in-law, Burnell Harris, (Gibsland, LA) Elizabeth Baxter, (Minden, LA) and Ellen Smith, and husband, Alan, (Haughton, LA); brother-in-law, John Harris, (Shreveport, LA). Also left to cherish his memory are his extended family who was always there for him whatever the need may have been, Will Hawkins, Jr. (who always said that was his brother); neighbor and friend, Jerome who was also always there for him; his buddy that he would take rides through the country with, John Carter; Joe English with whom he would go to the base with and reminisce, and buddy, Kirk.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Will Hawkins, Jr. (Joe) and Jerome Blankership.
