George Donald (Don) Whittington

SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral service celebrating the life of George Donald "Don" Whittington, 79, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2018, at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mimi McDowell and Rev. Dave Fortuna officiating. A reception will be at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church Parlor. Burial will follow at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery, Shreveport, LA. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA. Don was born December 19, 1938, in Florien, LA to Marie Hardin Whittington and Gordon Elwyn Whittington and passed away June 19, 2018, in Shreveport, LA. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and the United States Navy. Don retired from Bell South in 2002 after 30 years of service, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He was an active member of Noel Memorial for over 50 years where he was the head usher and a member of the Upper Room Sunday School class, and was a faithful volunteer at the Food Pantry at Noel. Don was an Assistant Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts Troup #15 for 30 years; in 2014 he received the Prestigious National God and Service Award. Don never met a stranger no matter where he went. He touched many lives and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Don took great pride in his two children and their accomplishments as well as those of their friends. He adored his grandchildren and they all loved their "Grandgray". His great smile and hugs will be greatly missed, he was truly a blessing. Don was preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 52 years Betty Strickland Whittington; son, John D. Whittington and wife Dawn Amison Whittington of Shreveport, LA; daughter, Jane Whittington Mayfield and husband Steve Mayfield of Bossier City, LA; grandchildren, Hannah and Daniel Mayfield, Ayden and Logan Whittington, and Carter and Cameron Hines; twin brother, William Ronald Whittington of Bossier City, LA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special sisters-in-law and husband, Mary Lou and Weldon McClung and Robbie Peterson. The family would like to give special thanks to the Dr.'s and staff at Regional Urology, Christus Rehab, The Glen, and Amedysis Home Health and Hospice. Honoring Don as pallbearers will be Dan Hardin, Skip Hardin, Stephen Bridges, Jimmy McClung, Mark Waters, Jay Philyaw, Pat Zimmerman and Reuben Waters. The family suggests memorials may be made to Noel Memorial United Methodist Church or Boy Scout Troup #15 of Noel Memorial, both of 520 Herndon Street, Shreveport, LA 71101.
