Shreveport, La - Gordon Stanley Barkley went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2015, after 77 years of life. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at Providence Baptist Church and officiated by the Rev. Crawford Williams.
Mr. Barkley was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on April 16, 1938, to Reece James Barkley of Marshall, Texas, and Opal Bison Barkley of Noble, Louisiana. He was married to the love of his life, Alice Trangmar Barkley, for over 56 years.
After graduating from Fair Park High School, Mr. Barkley enjoyed a 45 year career in the railroad industry, beginning with the Illinois Central Railroad and retiring from the Kansas City Southern Railroad.
Mr. Barkley was a long time member of Ingleside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member. Later in life he was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was an exceptional fastpitch softball pitcher. He enjoyed coaching youth baseball and football and would faithfully go to practices and games after a hard day's work. He also loved to play golf and play the piano.
Mr. Barkley is survived by his wife, Alice; three sons, Eric and his wife Shannon, Gregory and his wife Samantha, and Geoffrey. He also leaves a beautiful legacy in his grandchildren - Matthew, Abigail, Anna Grace, Hannah, Jacob and Emma Barkley, and Kyle Lewis. In addition, he is survived by three sisters - Janice Barkley of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Vivian Tracy of Dallas, Texas, and Doris Graves of Shreveport.
